0Maserati Ghibli Hybrid Engine Explained
Here is what lies under the Ghibli Hybrid seductive bonnet.
Today, some 8 years later there are over 100,000 units produced and delivered around the world and we have a few friends driving this Italian sports sedan without any regrets in Malaysia.
In fact, the challenge facing Maserati management was to enter the world of electrification (hybrid and very soon full electric) which might take away the brand’s core philosophy and values. European emission laws are strict and so Maserati has to ‘play’ the game and this is why this new version of the Ghibli, a hybrid has arrived.
This is the first electrified vehicle in Maserati’s history. It is developed by the Maserati Innovation Lab in the Italian city of Modena. The hybrid Ghibli is being produced at their Avvocato Giovanni Agnelli Plant (AGAP) in Turin.
With 20 percent less fuel consumption but performance in line with the 350hp Ghibli petrol version, this Mild Hybrid Ghibli delivers efficiency with no compromises.
The 2.0l engine is derived from Fiat’s Multiair family mated to a Belt Starter-Generator and an e-booster which allows it to deliver 330PS and is good for a 5.7 seconds 0-100km/h sprint.
This means, it is almost as quick as its V6 powered sibling and sounds almost as good when in full throttle, whilst sipping much less fuel and costing less to run.
It runs a bespoke ECU designed specifically for use with a Maserati, while the range and practicality offered by the hybrid mean that the Maserati Ghibli Hybrid replaces the Ghibli diesel (which has been forced into retirement by emission laws).
The Dayco team designed and manufactured a tailored solution for the complete BSG (belt-integrated starter generator) hybrid system, also known as P0 Architecture, for Maserati’s MHEV (mild-hybrid electric vehicle) engine.
“This has been made possible through the compact design and use of optimized materials to produce the side-arm tensioner, the development of a new poly-V belt incorporating innovative materials and manufacturing processes to guarantee the best coefficient of friction during the lifetime of the engine, and finally, with the new damper pulley, specifically designed to protect the crankshaft of this powerful, MHEV engine.
This all new hybrid Maserati sports sedan is on sale now at Naza Italia in Malaysia and only a limited number of units are available right now.
Take a test drive and feel the power delivery and the drive dynamics before looking elsewhere for a special vehicle to own and drive.
