We Speak To Johan Hellsing From Geely Innovation Center

He Is The Principal Expert In Motion And Technology In Geely.

You may not have heard this name before. You might not get a lot of information about him on the internet. But this is one of the top drivetrain engineers in Geely for electric powertrains (next generation powertrains).

This is Johan Hellsing who has an illustrious background in electric motor design starting from his early days at Volvo Cars and then to Volvo Trucks and since 2013 with Geely’s CEVT.

So what is CEVT? Well, CEVT is an innovation and development center for future technologies for the Geely Group with the purpose of being at the forefront of new developments in mobility.

As the automotive industry is looking at new ways of providing clean, green emission free mobility, engineers like Johan Hellsing at CEVT are working to provide the solutions for the car showrooms as soon as tomorrow around the globe before the competition can even get into production.

Meanwhile, CEVT consists of some 2,000 people with offices in Gothenburg and Trollhättan in Sweden. CEVT currently works on projects for the car brands Volvo Cars, Geely Auto and Lynk & Co. CEVT is a subsidiary of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group.

If you need more information about CEVT, go to www.cevt.se and have a look at what they are working on….. no details as it is all top secret.

Johan Hellsing From Geely

QUESTION: What is your role at Geely?

ANSWER: We are working today for future technology for the whole Geely group and taking care of all brands under the Geely Group. Technology that is accessible to the whole group.

QUESTION: What are your thoughts on hybrid technology?

ANSWER: Toyota has had 20 years of hybrid technology running and it has been reliable, plus the plug-in hybrid technology that has been selling very well in Malaysia has come with great savings and zero range issues. Therefore, hybrid makes more sense in some markets where charging infrastructure is lacking.

QUESTION: Is Geely looking to have its own EV or hybrid battery business?

ANSWER: More and more car companies are looking at producing their own batteries for full electric vehicles and also doing a joint venture as the demand rises and the need to have their own battery product for long term warranties.

QUESTION: Why is there no manual gearshift for an electric vehicle?

ANSWER: Well, with an electric motor running the powertrain, there can be no manual gearshift as the torque delivery is strong.

QUESTION: Is fast charging good for EV batteries?

ANSWER: Well, fast charging reduces EV battery life and slow charging overnight gives longer life to your EV battery. So, take note EV owners. Yes, of course EV batteries are being developed with great new battery management software to reduce this issue.

We had little time online with Johan Hellsing, so the above was just some of the questions we managed to get answers and hope to meet and get more answers soon from an industry that is evolving fast.
