It will be replaced by a second race at Italy’s Misano circuit
For the second year in a row, the rising number of coronavirus cases has forced the cancellation of the Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix, which was set to take place at Sepang International Circuit from October 22 to 24.
The cancellation of the country’s biggest motorsport event was confirmed by the management of the Sepang International Circuit (SIC). The statement reads:
“Sepang International Circuit (SIC) regrets to announce the cancellation of the Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix 2021, which was scheduled from 22nd to 24th October.
Earlier this year, the MotoGP Sepang Official Test and the Shakedown Test set to take place in February were also affected.
Despite the setback, SIC remains optimistic and looks forward to featuring this prestigious race again in the 2022 calendar.
SIC would like to thank Dorna Sports S.L., Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Health, Malaysian National Security Council, local authorities, partners and motorsports fans for the continuous support to SIC despite the unprecedented challenges, in the spirit of sportmanship.”
Meanwhile, the FIM, IRTA and Dorna Sports have confirmed that the Malaysian GP will be replaced by another race at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. This will be the second race to be held at the Italian circuit, after the San Marino Grand Prix, which is scheduled to take place on 19 September. The name of the has yet to be announced.
