Porsche Macan Sports Luxury SUV Is Sold Out In Malaysia

You will need to wait for 3-6 months to get a new Macan.

The true testament of a product success comes when salespeople in the showroom smile and say, sorry I cannot take your booking right now as we have no stock for this year. Yes, this happened earlier this year at all new Porsche showrooms and then a few weeks ago, bookings could be taken, but the waiting time is estimated at between 3-6 months.

This is for the Porsche Macan sports luxury SUV. A younger sibling to the popular Cayenne, the Macan arrived in Malaysia in 2014 with prices starting from RM420,000, it was the easiest on the pocket Porsche model in the showroom.

Sold in Malaysia with 2 engine variants, the Macan is more than just a family vehicle. The efficient turbocharged 2-litre engine in the Macan delivers 252bhp from 5,000 to 6,800 rpm and delivers an impressive acceleration to 100km/h in just 6.7 seconds and with the optional Sport Chrono Package (which has the ‘Launch Control’ function included), the time is reduced to 6.5 seconds.

With the Macan ‘S’ the excitement increases with its 6-cylinder engine producing 340bhp and a sporting 460Nm of torque. The 0-100km/h dash is done in just 5.4 seconds, which is supercar territory with a SUV.

In February 2019 the Supervisory Board of Porsche AG announced that the next generation Macan SUV will be a fully electric series and it will be the first all-electric compact SUV from Porsche. Targeted to roll off the assembly line at the end of 2021 this new electric SUV will share the battery powered drivetrain of the successful Porsche Taycan EV.

Last month, Porsche management said that they are developing the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture alongside the first model to ride on it which will be the electric driven Porsche Macan. Porsche’s new platform which is co-developed with Audi will underpin several new models, including future Audis like the Q6 E-Tron.

So, why is the Porsche Macan sold out in Malaysia. Simple? During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Malaysian government announced a sales tax discount for cars to encourage sales and keep the economy moving. This moved the selling price of the ‘enhanced’ Porsche Macan Premium Package with prices starting from RM439,351, after 50 percent sales tax exemption.

Plus, Sime Darby Auto Performance loaded this sports SUV with three additional luxury and comfort features worth over RM39,000. They were Comfort Access, Park Assist with Surround View and the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM).

Lower pricing and added features made the Macan more desirable for the wealthy Malaysians and so bookings went faster than expected and all available stocks were sold out quickly. Now the wait is on for the next shipment to arrive from Germany.
