0Ford Mondeo Becomes A SUV In 2022
This is how the next generation Ford Mondeo will look like.
The last model of the Ford Mondeo was not a global best seller for the brand and despite its eco credentials, the Mondeo nameplate was not taken seriously outside of England.
Now comes news of a brand new Ford Mondeo and it is no longer a sedan or station-wagon. It as been sculptured and raised to become a sports SUV. This new Mondeo will also probably be battery powered making it a pure electric vehicle with a shared powertrain.
Like the recently launched Mustang Mach-E electric vehicle which was developed by Ford Team Edison, we are quite sure that Ford will take full advantage of the performance-enhancing weight distribution and torque delivery of this Mustang and adapt its all-electric powertrain for the 2022 Ford Mondeo pictured below.
Whether equipped with 288-cell, 68 kWh (useable) standard-range or 376-cell, 88 kWh (useable) extended-range variant, the lithium-ion battery is located centrally between the axles and beneath the floor for a low centre of gravity that supports sporty Mustang dynamics.
The high-performance batteries – tested at temperatures as extreme as minus 40 degrees Celsius – are secured inside a waterproof case surrounded by crash absorption protection. An advanced active liquid heating and cooling system regulates battery temperatures for optimised performance in extreme weather, improved charging times and sustained high-speed driving.
Battery power is transferred to an all-new, oil-cooled, rear-mounted AC motor to drive the rear wheels, and an additional front-mounted motor for models equipped with the all-wheel drive system. The permanent magnet, synchronous rear motor enables peak torque in 0.5 seconds for ultimate responsiveness:
· Mustang Mach-E rear-wheel drive delivers 269 PS with standard-range battery, 294 PS with extended-range battery and 430 Nm of torque for 0-100 km/h acceleration from 6.1 to 6.2 seconds 1
· Mustang Mach-E all-wheel drive delivers 269 PS with standard-range battery, 351 PS with extended-range battery and 580 Nm of torque for 0-100 km/h acceleration from 5.1 to 5.6 seconds 1
· Mustang Mach-E First Edition features all-wheel drive and extended-range battery as standard for 351 PS, 580 Nm of torque and 0-100 km/h acceleration in 5.1 seconds 1
· Mustang Mach-E GT features all-wheel drive and extended-range battery as standard for 487 PS, 860 Nm of torque and 0-100 km/h acceleration in 3.7 seconds 1
The available all-wheel drive system applies torque independently to the front and rear wheels for improved acceleration and handling – delivering the quintessential Mustang feel. Unique settings for shock absorbers, springs, anti-roll bars, steering and powertrain have been tailored for Europe’s typically narrower, more twisty roads and higher speed limits.
The current generation of the Ford Mondeo which was launched in late 2018 comes with a Hybrid powertrain. It has a control software that delivers a smooth, linear response to acceleration demand for a refined driving experience. The enhanced powertrain software is also more effective at using the engine’s torque to deliver greater fuel efficiency and performance – seamlessly adjusting transmission ratios to utilise the highest engine torque at lowest engine speed.
The hybrid powertrain delivers 187 PS, and combines a specially-developed 2.0-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine; electric motor; generator; 1.4 kWh lithium-ion battery; and a Ford-developed power-split automatic transmission that emulates the performance of a continuously-variable transmission.
Regenerative braking technology captures up to 90 per cent of the energy normally lost during braking to replenish the battery, contributing to anticipated CO2 emissions from 96 g/km and fuel efficiency from 4.2 l/100 km for the four-door, and anticipated CO2 emissions from 101 g/km and fuel efficiency from 4.4 l/100 km for the wagon.
Further technologies designed to help drivers optimise efficiency without sacrificing comfort include:
- Ford’s SmartGauge interface for monitoring fuel and energy consumption with features including Brake Coach that encourages gradual braking to help return more energy to the battery
- Electric power-assisted steering; and electrically-powered air-conditioning, powertrain cooling and vacuum systems, which significantly reduce drag on the engine
- A specially-developed exhaust gas heat recovery system that enables faster cabin warming
