This is basically Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing in bike form
Car-inspired motorcycles are not exactly new but we can’t help but feel overly thrilled every time a new one arrives. The most recent examples of such two-wheeled wonders are the Ducati Diavel 1260 Lamborghini and the MV Agusta Superveloce Alpine. The former is inspired by the ultra-modern Sian FKP 37 hybrid supercar while the latter borrows cues from the sexy Alpine A110. These are extremely desirable machines, to say the least. However, they both pale in comparison to this – the Gullwing X.
Brought into being by the creative folks at Tamarit Motorcycles, the Gullwing X is a bit more exceptional than those two as it draws inspiration from perhaps the most illustrious Mercedes-Benz of all time, the 300SL “Gullwing”. The foundation of this project is a carburetted Triumph Thruxton 900, itself a revered icon in the motorcycling world. Of course, you will not see the gullwing doors here but this cafe racer has something that reminds us of the feature.
What we mean by that is the front-hinged, single-piece bodywork that can be raised hydraulically. We’re not sure what exactly does this achieve but it is certainly a cool party trick that you can show off to your biker buddies. At the front, a hand-made fairing encasing the round headlight mimics the front part of the legendary Benz. The four-piece gel cushion seat is a work of art, too.
The design is not the only thing that is impressive about the Gullwing X. The mechanicals deserve to be highlighted as well, especially the 865 cc, DOHC, four-stroke parallel-twin engine that has been completely rebuilt. With improvements that include a pair of Keihin carburettors, K&N Power filters, Motogadget ECU and in-house developed Speedster exhaust, the engine now makes 98 hp, about 30 hp more than stock. The combination of Galfer discs and Beringer calipers should provide ample stopping power.
Other valuable toys that can be found on this special project include Kustom Tech levers and brake cylinders, Hagon Nitro shock absorbers with chrome dampers and Kineo wire-spoked wheels wrapped in Victory Classic TT rubbers. Riders will be looking at a very minimalistic cockpit, which is just a tiny digital speedometer set on a beautiful custom aluminium triple clamp.
The Alicante-based workshop will only be making nine of these and according to the website, at least one (presumably this very unit here) has found an owner. Each unit will come with its own colour scheme. Interested? Tamarit has not disclosed the price but you can leave your contact details on the website and they’ll get back to you.
