Is this the ‘naked motorcycle’ you were looking for?
Following the introduction of the MT-09, Yamaha has now unveiled the latest version of its smaller sibling, the MT-07.
So, what’s new? Starting off with the design, the mid-size naked bike now sports a compact LED projector headlight flanked by LED daytime running light strips, as well as a newly-designed bodywork with twin winglet-type air intakes positioned in front of the fuel tank. Also new is the inverted LCD screen with clear, modern graphics, and compact LED turn signals.
To amplify the MT-07‘s mean and aggressive look, the designers at Yamaha has given the bike new colours and graphics, as well as a host of blacked out components including brake and clutch levers.
At the heart of the MT-07 is a 689 cc, twin-cylinder, four-stroke DOHC mill that makes 73.4 PS at 8,750 rpm and 67 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm, with a six-speed transmission routing the output to the rear wheel. The engine is now Euro 5 compliant, thanks to optimised fuel injection settings, an upgraded ECU and a new 2-1 exhaust system.
As for riding dynamics, new tapered aluminium handlebars (15 mm wider on each side) promise a more assertive riding position, while seat height is maintained at 805 mm for easy riding character. Michelin Road 5 tyres provide sporty and secure handling, especially in poor road conditions and bad weather.
As before, the diamond frame is linked with telescopic forks up front and a link-type suspension with double swingarm at the rear, both with 130 mm of travel. New larger diameter 298 mm dual front discs with four-piston calipers provide improved braking performance without the dreaded extra unsprung weight.
The new Yamaha MT-07 is expected to be launched in Europe starting March next year. Pricing has yet to be announced and its arrival in Malaysia is still uncertain.
