BMW seat-belt buckle sensor recall

BMW, the fault can trigger airbags and belt tensioners unnecessarily.

Take note that this recall is only affecting a small number of vehicles which were sold in Germany and North America. Seat-belt buckles are currently causing problems for some new BMW vehicles. In Munich, an incorrectly installed sensor system within the buckle can lead to a mistaken triggering of the airbags and belt tensioners provided for the seat.

The problem is related to wiring in something called the Hall effect sensor in the front seat belt buckles.

BMW was performing a road test in January 2020 when a continuous audible and visual warning of the seat belt reminder system was noticed.

The supplier was contacted and engineers determined a production machine had been changed which inadvertently changed the tolerance between the Hall effect sensors and the seat belt buckles. Finally, BMW determined the wiring for the Hall effect sensor wasn’t manufactured to the specified length.

If the system detects a front seat occupant as unbelted when they are in fact wearing their seat belt, this would result in an audible warning and a visual warning symbol.

Seat belts are one of the most important safety features in your vehicle. Seatbelts help prevent you from moving around too much in the seat while you’re driving. This is especially true in the event of a collision where the seat belt will lock and keep you in the seat even if the car rolls. This is why this recall is important and should be attended to if you are affected by it.

This is not the first time that BMW is doing a recall for its new cars. BMW headquarters says no crashes or injuries have been reported. Concerned owners may contact their BMW dealer to check.
