Stemming from a passion to empower people, especially the marginalised youth, Cycle & Carriage awarded its inaugural study grant to Chandra Gaantan A/L Chandran, Kathiravan A/L Suresh and Yash Mithun Raj A/L Marimuthu, who are pursuing a course in City & Guilds Diploma Level 3 in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles. The other recipients were Ahmad Aiman bin Abdullah, who is pursuing a diploma in Automotive Technology; and Kirk Lien Sieng, who is studying Automotive – After Sales Services.

“I had plans to stop studying due to financial constraints. This is a turning point in my life. The Cycle & Carriage Study Grant has come at the right time, helping me in my journey to follow my passion and pursue a career in the automotive industry,” said Chandra.

Grateful to be selected, Cycle & Carriage Study Grant recipient, Aiman, said his passion in the automotive field was inspired by his brother who serves in the army’s automotive division. Meanwhile, Kathiravan, who is equally happy to be receiving the grant, said his passion began from a tender age. “I started with repairing bicycles, then moved on to motorcycles and then cars. With the study grant, I hope to be a specialist technician for commercial vehicles in the near future,” he said.

The initiative is targeted at youths requiring financial assistance and who come from families with a monthly household income of RM3,000 and below. Each recipient will receive an annual bursary of up to RM5,000 for a maximum of three years.

Upon completion, grant recipients will be offered paid internship opportunities during semester breaks in addition to a one-year bond with Cycle & Carriage. Being one of the leading dealer groups of Mercedes-Benz passenger and commercial vehicles, as well as a dealer group of FUSO commercial vehicles in Malaysia, Cycle & Carriage offers grant recipients the opportunity greater exposure to actual working environments, learning directly from qualified and experienced technicians.

With the study grant steering Yash Mithun closer to his career goal, he advised his peers to be brave in the face of adversity and to seize every opportunity that comes their way. Fellow recipient, Kirk, chimed in with some words of wisdom, encouraging his peers to persevere and never give up easily.

The study grant is open to Malaysian youths aged 16 years and above who are currently enrolled in or have secured a placement in an automotive course within a skills training institution accredited by the Department for Skills Development (DSD) of the Ministry of Human Resources or Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE). Applicants must also possess a minimum credit in English and Mathematics either at the Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3 (PT3), Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) or Sijil Vokasional Malaysia (SVM) level.

The study grant is part of Cycle & Carriage’s on-going commitment towards social development of the local community and the nation’s technical and vocational education agenda.

The Cycle & Carriage Study Grant will be open once again to receive new applications this year. Look out for the announcement on Cycle & Carriage Bintang’s website: http://bit.ly/CCBStudyGrant2020
