0Mazda Skyactiv-D is the best selling Diesel in Japan
With over 500,000 diesel Mazda’s delivered in Japan alone, Mazda is celebrating.
Mazda diesel powered vehicles have just received a record 500,000 customers in Japan. In a country where emissions is important and vehicle quality is taking very seriously, Mazda has becoming the top diesel powered vehicle where over 500,000 diesel vehicles have been sold domestically since it has been implemented in the company’s units, more than seven years ago.
In total, this amounts to more than half of all diesel-powered cars sold in Japan from 2012 up to 2019. This is more than previous favorites from Nissan and Toyota. The total number of diesel powered vehicles sold in Japan from 2012-2019 is about 960,000, therefore, Mazda’s 500,000 sales figure gives it an impressive 52% diesel market share.
Mazda’s best selling CX-5 carries this diesel engine under its bonnet. Four out of five Mazda CX-5s sold in Japan thus far have a 2.2-litre SKYACTIV-D under the bonnet.
Mazda uses the Skyactiv-D technology to make their vehicles more fuel efficient. Skyactiv technology uses the world’s lowest diesel engine compression ratio to improve driving performance greatly, making it more fuel efficient and better for the environment. Skyactiv-D features a 20% better fuel efficiency, thanks to its low compression ratio of 14.0:1, a brand new two stage turbocharger that gives a smooth and linear response, and greatly complies with global emissions regulations.
The engine’s variable twin turbocharger boosts torque and responsiveness throughout the rpm range right up to the unusually high redline of well over 5,000rpm. Yet it still delivers best-in class fuel economy and CO2 emissions* starting at 3.9 l/100km and 104 g/km on the all-new Mazda6 sedan, and only 4.6 l/100km and 119 g/km on the CX-5. The SKYACTIV-D is thus a very viable alternative to hybrids, and it’s a lot of fun, too
In Malaysia, the latest Mazda vehicle to arrive with diesel power is the CX-8 SUV which features an updated version of our SKYACTIV-D 2.2, the engine responsible for much of the growth in the clean diesel market in Japan in recent years. The updates are the most substantial since the engine’s introduction in 2012 and have resulted in a much quieter engine and significantly enhanced driving performance.
At the same time, Mazda engineers have applied innovations and technologies designed to improve fuel consumption and reduce harmful emissions under real-world driving conditions. As a result, the CX-8 delivers outstanding fuel economy and environmental performance.
The Mazda CX-8 also features a sophisticated design, courtesy of Mazda’s KODO design language. Mazda strove to create a look both timeless and edgy for the CX-8 design. The aim was to deliver timeless beauty and a premium feel in a package that will continue to excite owners and enhance their driving experience for years to come.
