Here comes the Jimny finally. Yes this model of the Jimny was launched a few years ago in Tokyo. It has been selling well in all markets it has been introduced but not with huge effect as since the 1st Jimny was launched some 25 years ago, the competition have taken advantage of the Jimny’s popularity and launched compact 4-door versions of their cars with 4×4 drivetrain installed below to cater to a growing buyer segment for small 4×4 SUV’s.
The design of this new Jimny shows its DNA to the original Jimny with the edges smoothen out. Its proportions and essential shape are unmistakably Suzuki.
Standard equipment includes dual air-bag, ABS with EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution), front disk brake with rear drum brake, ISOFIX rear seats, rear flat folding seats and a single CD player.
Our experience with the 4WD Jimny starts with 86hp 110Nm engine that is not the fastest machine in the segment but proves to be very smooth and trackable. The engine is quiet on ignition and you almost fail to hear it idling from inside the cabin.
Front seat comfort is good and you get very good outward view on all sides.
The access to the rear seats is easily done with the tilting of the front seats and you need to just climb in. Once in the rear, adults will notice the tight legroom, but kids will love the high seat position and clear outward view. Luggage room is tight with the rear seats up and much better of course when seats are folded.
The instrumentation meters are easy to read and also incorporates an informative and easy to read display that shows the usual fuel consumption figure, among others. The audio unit is simple and could do with an upgrade.
On the road this Jimny is a smooth operator as it does not bounce around despite its 4×4 underpinnings. It rides like a compact car with added firmness. The steering is light and makes for easy tight city streets maneuvering. Find a little dirt track like we did and just switch on 4×4 function and the Jimny takes to the mud and dirt with easy.
Its lightweight does not ‘bog’ it down in the dirt and it climbs inclines with little fuss. It however does not have the torque of larger capacity pickup trucks or SUV’s but nevertheless it works well for what it is. Yes, it is an honest little 4×4 that will take you further in over a large 4×4 vehicle. After a while you will start having fun as the Jimny bounces along in the dirt with the steering inputs allowing you to correct its trajectory before is losses its composure.
My suggestion is to look at this new Jimny more as an urban compact SUV that is so easy to work around city streets and offers the best turning circle, parking ease and fuel consumption for the owner. For a construction company, town council, small contractor or landscaping company, this Jimny will not disappoint and will provide years of fuss free motoring.
