Mitsubishi Lancer Heritage
Over the years, Mitsubishi Motors has proven itself to be a sure winner in the various motor-sports activities held across the world, especially at the off-road desert challenges and Dakar Rally thus reinforcing its image as a durable, reliable and quality vehicle manufacturer.
To brave the challenging Safari Rally, Mitsubishi developed the Lancer in 1973. Fondly remembered as the ‘A73 Lancer’, the Lancer 1600 GSR was an immediate success in rallying, taking a remarkable 1-2-3-4 victory in the 8th Southern Cross Rally in 1976. Later in 1981, the eco climate prompted Mitsubishi to produce a more compact engine with the Lancer EX2000 Turbo.
During the 1990s, the Lancer was a strong contender in international rallies, including the World Rally Championship. With its first generation, the Lancer made its mark on the rallying world, the start of a legendary model line which would become the World Rally Championship (WRC)-winning Evo series. Some of the WRC championships that the Lancer EVO has won include Tap Rally Portugal and Catalunya Rally in 1997 as well as Sweedish Rally, Safari Rally, Rally Argentina and Rally Finland in 1998 to name a few.
The Mitsubishi Lancer has always demonstrated its excellence on the rally trails as well as on the roads since its introduction in 1973. Built to last, the spacious and distinctly styled Lancer delivers a confident and genuinely satisfying motoring experience. In fact, motoring aficionados worldwide have over the years recognized the sleek, stunning and compact Lancer as one of the best in its class.
