Some 7 years ago Mazda re-wrote the rule book for the SUV segment when the launched the CX-5. It was a brand new model following the CX-7 and CX-9 crossover vehicles and it brought Skyactiv technology into Malaysia.
Apart from using radical engine design utilizing new piston shape, new injectors and a 4-2-1 exhaust header; the package also needed an innovative redesign in transmission and chassis construction along with efforts to reduce weight. There were two variants of the CX-5 at launch, a 2-wheel drive and an all-wheel drive, both using the same 2 litre Skyactiv engine but in different states of tune.
This new engine came with the highest compression ratio ever in a petrol engine – 14.0:1 – which claimed to be able to give a 15% of improved efficiency as well as giving more torque. The auto gearbox meanwhile combined all the good qualities of CVT and dual clutches; mainly, it is designed for fuel efficiency.
Our first experience was with the 4WD CX-5 which came with 152hp at 6000rpm and 198Nm at 4000rpm. Like any Mazda, the cabin was immediately impressive with its modern design and quality. The steering wheel looks like it came off a sports car and the instrumentation meters are easy to read and also incorporates an informative and easy to read display that shows the usual fuel consumption figure, among others. The audio unit had a touch screen, GPS navigation and even Bluetooth handsfree capabilities. Next we test drove the 2WD and we can report that there are truth to its claims of being fuel efficient – the 2WD gave us an average of 8.5 liters per 100 kilometer while the all wheel drive gave us an expectedly higher average of 11.6 liters per 100 km. We can also take note that these numbers came from real world driving manners so to speak as we travelled in heavy traffic as well as on the open highway.
In short, this first generation CX-5 is a fine SUV that continues the innovative attitude of Mazda in order to give their customers fuel efficiency. It looks great on the move and gives you a very satisfied experience on the road without straining you with a high fuel consumption.
Today, we see too many units of the CX-5 on Malaysian roads due to its popularity. It’s reliable, well built, easy on the pocket and looks good despite its age.
Here is a single owner unit that does not look worn at all. Priced at almost half of its original selling price, this might be worth a look.
