The Federal Highway’s bike lane has been under repair and maintenance for a while now. In the last year plus, drivers may have noticed an increased number of motorcyclists driving down alongside them on this public road. Now though, things have changed.
This latest clip that was shared with us shows the police stopping cyclists from using the highway. Publicity stunt? The video does look decently produced (no shaky, grainy footage and decent edits) which indicates that PDRM probably consented to it being filmed at the least.
Regardless, if you’re a motorbike user or know someone who is, the message is clear: the bike lanes have been renovated, time to get back on them.
About the Federal Highway
The Federal Highway is a Malaysian-controlled-access highway connecting the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, and Klang, Selangor. The highway starts from Seputeh in Kuala Lumpur to Klang, Selangor. It is the busiest highway in Klang Valley during rush hour from/to Kuala Lumpur. The Federal Highway is coded as Federal Route 2.
History
The history of the highway started after the separation of Singapore from Malaysia on 9 August 1965, when the Malaysian government decided to make Port Swettenham (now Port Klang) as Malaysia’s new national port as a replacement of Singapore. As a result, the government planned to build a highway connecting Port Klang to Kuala Lumpur by upgrading the former Kuala Lumpur–Klang Highway (Jalan Kuala Lumpur–Klang) (opened to traffic on 14 January 1959) to a full motorway by replacing the existing at-grade intersections with interchanges, making the Federal Highway as Malaysia’s first expressway.
The Kuala Lumpur–Petaling Jaya Traffic Dispersal Scheme was implemented in 1974 under the surveillance of the Malaysian Public Works Department (JKR). This scheme includes the Kuala Lumpur Inner Ring Road, Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 1, Jalan Syed Putra and Federal Highway Route 2 (Kuala Lumpur–Petaling Jaya). Funded by a loan granted by the World Bank, the upgrade works for the Federal Highway from Subang Airport Interchange to Kuala Lumpur started from 1974 until 1977.
The highway was originally a 4-lane limited access highway except for the Petaling Jaya stretch where it became a 6-lane highway. However, in 1992 PLUS Expressways, the concession holder of North-South Expressway has upgraded the entire highway to a 6-lane highway with two toll plazas, Batu Tiga and Sungai Rasau. The 6-lane toll highway had begun in operation on 11 May 1993. The highway handles incredible volumes of traffic there is significant congestion at more or less any time of day.

Completed? Really?
Let’s turn on the cam and take a ride through the bike lane.
I am a biker myself. Trust me, go take a ride along the PJ-KL stretch, both ways, before offering your comments against motorcylists riding on the Federal Highway. The Hari Raya holidays would be a good time with lower traffic volume, especially when you are forced off the biker’s lane. And don’t forget your waze – in case you come to a dead end and know not where to go.
Too many people think it all fun for us who are shitting bricks for being forced into a gamble with our lives. Of course, there are the rotten apples, as much as there are drivers who treat every drive as Paris-Dakkar challenge.
For umpteen years, the lives of thousands of motorcyclists and their pillion riders have been sold to the greed of capitalistic developers. Before that, and even until now, the blood of those on two wheels is too cheap for JKR or DBKL or who ever has the obligation to design and maintain the biker’s lane as safe to use. WHERE WERE THE COPS ALL THE WHILE ? WHAT ARE THEY TRYING TO PROVE? THAT THEY HAVE THE POWER TO COW AND BULLY THE GENERALLY FINANCIALLY CHALLENGED BIKERS’ COMMUNITY?
I CHALLENGE THEM TO PUT BEHIND BARS EACH AND EVERYONE WHO IS CAUSE OF MOTORCYCLISTS STRAYING OFF THE MOTORCYCLE LANE. JUST TO BE FAIR ON BOTH SIDES OF THE EQUATION.
AND IF I CAN PROVE THAT MOTORCYCLISTS ARE BEING FORCED OFF THEIR RIGHTFUL ACCESS TO PUBLIC ASSETS, CAN WE MOTORCYCLISTS ASK THAT THE COPS PUT THEMSELVES BEHIND BARS FOR HARASSMENT AND LOP SIDED INTERPRETATION OF THE LAW?
Well said
nice one Fookc.
ppl shld try the bike lane…see if the quality and safety is good enough
narrow…bumpy…uneven…puddles…flooded underpasses…plant roots hanging down at underpasses…try it at peak hour…damn steam wan…
Done renovation?
Are you sure about it?
Let’s take 1 part, from KL to PJ only.
Bike lane from outside Mid Valley towards Bangsar South, the lane still closed down.
Riders have to ride on the main road from there.
For other parts, I not sure about it.
But during night time, the bike lane are too quiet especially tunnel side.
Can they sure the riders’ safety? It is sometimes dark there and the bike lane condition not well.
Can they guarantee on no robbery as well too? No one will noticed from main road when it happens.
I still remember the Police saying bikers are allowed to use the highway from dusk to dawn following the case of a wire across the motorcycle lanes on exiting the tunnels. Does this ruling still stand?
