They’re at it again. McLaren, hot off the release of the Speedtail and Senna GTR, are already planning to show yet another high-performance car.
This one’s not quite as spectacular and track-oriented as their most recent hypercars. In fact, it appears as if McLaren wants to push into the tourer segment just as Aston Martin begins their push into the supercar and hypercar market.
This new McLaren GT will be shown next week (15th May 2019) and slot in next to the Sport and Super Series cars currently on sale. Despite that, it will share ‘DNA’ with the Speedtail model.
To recap, McLaren Automotive’s current portfolio looks a bit like this:
Sport Series
- 540C (Coupe)
- 570S (Coupe, Spider)
- 570GT
- 600LT (Coupe, Spider)
Super Series
- 720S (Coupe, Spider)
Ultimate Series
- Senna
- Senna GTR
- Speedtail
McLaren may price it between the Sport and Super Series cars. Right now the Super Series is looking quite ’empty’. In previous years, we had models like the 625C, 650S, and 675LT all filling in little niches of their own.
Add to the fact that the Sport and Ultimate Series both have comfort-focused cars like the 570GT and Speedtail, and you have a real gap in the line up becoming clearer.
McLaren Automotive are one of the very few remaining profitable UK-based car companies left. Part of the reason they’re staying rich and relevant is that they just keep launching model after model, filling every niche available.
