There has been a lot of chatter online about a car scrapping policy in Malaysia and even though the Transport Ministry has just quashed all rumours and chatter on it, we are sure some extra smart agency officials will bring this topic up again very soon in order to benefit some quarters. Yes, car scrapping works in many countries……where new car prices are NOT high and the government has a scheme to buy back the scrapped cars to allow the owners to afford new cars, but we do not enjoy that benefit.
Also, our lower and middle class workers do not earn enough (monthly salaries are still not on par) when compared to nations employing car scrapping.
1. Imagine a retired 60 something school teacher owning a fully paid up 1996 Honda Civic 1.6L. The car works fine and gives no problems. Yes, it is 23-year-old car but with no issue why should this retiree scrap his one owner Civic for a new compact car that will incur monthly instalments. This new car might not even be better than his 23-year old Civic.
2. What if a 23-year-old fresh graduate working in Klang Valley drives a ‘hand me down’ from the mother, a 2008 Nissan Latio 1.6L. The car works perfectly, has low maintenance, is still good for outstation travel for the monthly visits to the hometown in Muar and has airbags for decent safety. The car has no installments and fuel consumption is pretty decent…almost the same as a new car costing RM80k. With the high cost of Kang Valley living, this fresh grad is better of driving the no instalment Nissan Latio until their salary gets better and maybe a down-payment for a small condo is made. Scrapping the Latio for a new basic car with monthly instalments does not make any sense at all unless the retired parents in Muar are helping out with monthly payments.
Now in an economy where new car prices are subjected to minimal tax, an End Of Life Vehicle (ELV) scheme will work as buying a new Nissan or Honda will probably be 30-35% lower compared to what we are paying for it today.
So, until car prices in Malaysia come down to levels similar to North America and Europe, we will keep maintaining our old cars and try and save on monthly instalments.
I agree. No scrapping of old cars. My 30 years old Nissan Sentra 1.6 Saloon is still good with original paint and engine. With regular services in Nissan authorized dealer and other service centre. I like the car so much and willing to spend some money to keep it tip top condition. However the Govt is replacing the air bag of old cars. My car didn’t quality because short of one week to quality. After changing a new battery my air bag light was on. I went to 8 shops including authorized dealer to reset it but no one is able to do it. Reason too old no software to diagnose the problems. Still have to keep on paying for checking without repairing. To spend another few thousand to replace the air bag is out of the question. Why can the Government help by replacing the faulty air of any old car FOC.?
Cars that are old and high maintenance can be sold off to the scrap dealers. The whole process of selling scrap Car is very simple and easy. All you have to do is give your Car’s registration number and get a quote for it.
