The Bavarian manufacturer is currently testing their next generation 1 Series to tackle the A-Class success. This new 1 Series will use the FAAR architecture which is an evolution of the UKL platform that the Mini Countryman and BMW X1 / X2 uses.
Target Market
This 3rd generation of Series will be more agile and targeted for pure driving pleasure. This new 1 Series will be equipped with the ARB technology from the i3 electric model. This is actually a traction control integrated in the management of the engine and no longer in the control unit of the ESP (DSC for Dynamic Stability Control). The advantage of this system is that it allows information travels faster.
Power Delivery
The most powerful version of the new 1 Series will be the M135i. It will be equipped with 4-wheel drive and powered by a 4-cylinder 2-liter that will offer 306hp and a torque figure of 450Nm.
The Competition Is
It will clearly be a competitor to the latest Mercedes-AMG A35 4Matic whose power delivery is almost identical. BMW has not yet shared its performance figures but we can guess a 5.0 seconds acceleration time to 100km/h with its 8-speed gearbox.
Cabin Comfort
The new FAAR architecture also offers better interior space. The load volume of the 1 Series will be 380 liters, a gain of 20 liters compared to the previous generation. At the rear, passengers have more roof clearance (+1.9 cm) and more legroom (+ 3.3 cm).
