Earlier today, our editor received this photograph through social media showing a Toyota Sprinter Trueno in a ditch. The photo was sent without any context, but this most probably took place in Malaysia. This guess is based on the number plate of the Land Cruiser Prado next to it.
The Sprinter Trueno is also often referred to by its series number, AE86. It went from a simple, lightweight tuner-friendly car to a proper collector’s item after being popularised in the manga/anime Initial D. A quick search online reveals some owners valuing it at RM99,000. There are, in fact a few listed for international audiences sitting in Port Klang as evidenced by this listing site. Prices here also show the car’s value between US$12,000-US$25,000 depending on condition.
The car in the photograph looks pretty close to being totalled. Damage can be seen around the door and A-pillar, and that front end looks very badly dinged up as well. We wonder what the owner’s going to do now. We’ve heard that Allianz Malaysia underwrites a few older Japanese sportscars, so perhaps he or she is properly covered.
