BMW has introduced high-performance compact SUV models. The X3 M and X4 M were both revealed today along with ‘Competition’ packs for those who want just a tiny bit more. Here’s a video highlighting everything you need to know about the cars:
Here are the details.
Common to both vehicles is the powertrain. Both feature an inline-6 petrol engine displacing 3-litres and producing 480hp and 600Nm of torque. This engine features a newly developed M TwinPower Turbo technology. Fuel consumption is rated at 10.5L/100km combined cycle. With the Competition pack, you get an additional 30hp.
The transmission used is an 8-speed M Steptronic with Drivelogic and M xDrive all-wheel drive. This system is similar to the one used on the latest BMW M5, meaning it tends to send more power to the rear wheels. The system is also equipped to split engine power between each individual wheel when necessary.
Both vehicles go from 0-100km/h in 4.2 seconds. With the Competition Edition, you shave 0.1 seconds off that time.
Everything from the suspension’s electronically-controlled dampers, steering and brakes are all M-specific, including lightweight 20″ alloy rims.
Aerodynamic and cooling capabilities have been enhanced for these models, particularly in the Competition packs which bring exclusive exterior trim pieces in high-gloss black, larger alloy wheels and an M Sport exhaust system.
Inside, the steering wheel, sports seats, gearshift selector all get the M treatment. The Competition packs here give you Merino leather two-tone upholstery with Alcantara highlights.
There’s even an M Carbon exterior package in the pipeline. Watch the launch films for both models here:
