Subaru’s modern image is synonymous with safety. By now, most are aware that all Subarus are sold with symmetrical all-wheel drive and boxer engines. But now, Subaru have also got cutting-edge driver assist safety suite known as ‘EyeSight’.
Eyesight gives Subaru drivers a safety net in order to prevent or reduce the impact of a collision. A couple of front-facing optical cameras serve as digital eyes, scanning the path ahead. The EyeSight system is equipped to recognise and react in a number of distinct situations.
- Adaptive Cruise Control
Regular cruise control keeps you at a set speed automatically. Adaptive Cruise Control does the same, but is intelligent enough to slow your car down if there’s a vehicle ahead. When the cameras determine that the path is clear again, Adaptive Cruise Control gets you back up to your set speed once more
- Pre-Collision Braking
In an emergency, every fraction of a second matters. The cameras on the EyeSight system are able to recognise when the vehicle in front of you is getting too close too quickly. It will first give you a warning, then if you still do nothing, the vehicle’s brakes will be engaged automatically.
- Pre-Collision Throttle Management
The worst accidents can happen from just a little bit of carelessness. Say you put the car is ‘Drive’, thinking it’s in ‘Reverse’ and there’s a wall right ahead of you. The cameras can detect this obstacle and prevent you from driving straight into that wall.
- Lane Departure and Lane Sway Warning
Drifting away from your lane is something that happens to many. Most of the time, there aren’t any consequences, but it’s still a major cause of road accidents today. Eyesight is equipped to detect when this occurs and alert you to it.
- Lead Vehicle Start Alert
This last one is more of a convenience feature than anything. Say you stop at a traffic light and get distracted by the infotainment unit or your smartphone. You’re not likely to notice the light change to green and the cars ahead of you move. However, EyeSight is always watching, and will alert you when this happens. A little beep from the system is far friendlier than a honk from the cars behind you.
