Jamie Whincup and co-driver Paul Dumbrell at Sandown winning the RABBLE.club Sandown 500 event 12 of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, Sandown Raceway, Victoria. Australia.
Having led by nearly 20 seconds twice during Dumbrell’s Safety Car-interupted run, Whincup ultimately finished 6.8312 clear of team-mates Shane van Gisbergen and Earl Bamber.
It is the third victory for Whincup and Dumbrell together in the Melbourne race, following triumphs in 2013 and ’14. Craig Lowndes and Steven Richards finished third to complete the podium rout, while Scott McLaughlin and Alex Premat had to fight to hold onto fourth from Erebus’ David Reynolds and Luke Youlden.
With the results, van Gisbergen’s championship lead over Shell V-Power Racing driver McLaughlin grows to 55 with four events remaining, while Whincup in third is 338 behind.
