Volkswagen had in the past hinted that the Beetle would not be renewed, refreshed with a new model. Instead, a new electric version of the Microbus would take its place in spirit.
Well, now we’ve got a rough date for when the last Beetle will roll off the production line: Summer 2019.
That means by this time next year, the only new Beetles being sold would be just them clearing the stocks. Does that mean it’s going to become a sought-after classic? Highly doubtful. The original Beetle was a robust, iconic thing. The current one uses downsized, turbocharged engines and complex dual clutch transmissions unlikely to stand the test of time.
