Europeans Buying More Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicle (EV) demand in the EU continues to grow at a low level. According to the car manufacturers’ association Acea, 32,202 pure battery-powered passenger cars were newly registered in the 28 member states in the second quarter, 46% more than in the same period of the previous year.

In addition, there are 11,554 vehicles in the EFTA states Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, which alone account for 10,451 new registrations (plus 34%). The second largest market is Germany with 8,170 units (plus 59%), followed by France with 7,082 vehicles (plus 15%).

If one puts the registration numbers in relation to the size of the passenger car market of the countries, Norway is by a far distance above all other countries.

In the whole of the current year, 65,713 new cars have been registered in the EU (plus 40%), and the EU and EFTA come to 88,286 units . Nevertheless, e-mobility remains a phenomenon of wealthy states; In the new member states, only 2,175 new cars came on the road in the first half of the year.

Demand for pure plug-in hybrid vehicles continues to be in greater demand in the EU than pure e-cars. In the first half of the year, 77,304 units were newly registered, 51% more than in the same period of the previous year. The number of new hybrid cars grew by 37% to 291,584 vehicles.

According to Acea, a total of 135,369 purely electric passenger cars were registered in Europe last year (EFTA and EU states together).
