The Volvo EX90 was launched alongside the new XC90 to form the twin flagships of the brand.
Back in March, Volvo Car Malaysia starting taking bookings of the first-ever Volvo EX90. Today they launched it alongside the renewed XC90 as twin flagships of the brand.

This fully electric Volvo EX90 is priced at RM442,888 for Peninsular Malaysia and RM442,648 for Sabah and Sarawak. It features advanced technology that enables regular over-the-air software updates based on real-time data collection, lidar for accurate object detection and even comes with three rows of seats.

Malaysia will receive fully-imported units of the EX90 (from China) until the end of the year when local assembly will begin. The one specification we get is the EX90 Ultra Twin variant which has 623km of range (WLTP) and 517 horsepower enabling a 0-100km/h sprint time of 4.9 seconds. This version gets 21″ Aero wheels, natural birch trim and Nordico upholstery, and a Sand Dune colour option.

Advanced Computing and Sensor Systems
The EX90 operates on Volvo’s Superset tech stack, built with NVIDIA DRIVE AI platforms and Volvo’s in-house software. Its computing system manages multiple safety features:
- Comprehensive sensor array including radars, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors
- Roof-integrated Luminar lidar unit that detects objects in three-dimensional space
- Lidar detection range of pedestrians up to 250 meters
- Ability to detect hazards as small as a loose tire on a dark road from 120 meters away
- Functional even in complete darkness

Research indicates lidar technology may reduce severe accidents by up to 20% and improve overall crash avoidance by up to 9%.
Driver Understanding System
The EX90 includes a Driver Understanding system using:
- Two interior cameras
- Capacitive steering wheel sensors
- Patented software tracking gaze patterns and steering behavior
This system detects driver distraction or impairment and provides escalating alerts before potential intervention. In medical emergencies, the vehicle can safely stop, activate hazard lights, and contact emergency services. TIME Magazine recognized this system as one of 2024’s Best Inventions.

Occupant Sensing Technology
The EX90’s Occupant Sensing system uses interior radar sensors that detect even sub-millimeter movements, such as a sleeping child. When a locked car detects occupants:
- The vehicle remains unlocked
- Alerts are triggered via lights and horn
- Notifications are sent to the Volvo Cars App
- Climate control remains active to prevent heatstroke

User Interface and Infotainment
The infotainment system features:
- 14.5-inch center screen powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon Cockpit Platforms
- Simplified interface requiring fewer interactions
- Contextual function display based on driving situations
- Google Built-in with voice control
- Google Play app support
- Apple CarPlay compatibility
- Secondary display behind the steering wheel with customizable viewing modes
- Heads-up display for minimal distraction
