What Is The Used Value Of Your EV After 2 To 3 Years

Here Are The Prices Of Common New And Used Popular EV Models Here In Malaysia

Over the past 2 to 3 years, the electric vehicle (EV) market in Malaysia has grown exponentially and with more options from various price ranges to choose from, buyers are spoilt for choice. Now that some time has passed, some EVs are popping up on the used market too, so which should you choose, new or used?

Well the answer depends on your budget and what kind of EV you are looking for. Whether it’s a small hatchback or a big SUV, something basic or something more tech-packed and luxurious, there is a choice for you. So let’s first look at the prices for some more popular brand new EVs then compare their used prices.

New EV Prices (2022–2025):

Let’s start with the BYD Atto 3. First launched in December 2022 from RM149,800, the Atto 3 quickly became a top-seller in Malaysia for its blend of practicality and style. In 2024, the price was reduced to RM123,800 to make it more competitive with newer offerings.

Up next we have the facelifted Tesla Model 3 which launched in October 2024, is offered in either a RWD or a Dual Motor AWD Long Range variant, is priced at RM189,000 and RM218,000, respectively.

Lastly, let’s look at the BYD Dolphin. Recognized as one of the most affordable EVs with good specs, the Dolphin starts from RM100,530 and goes up to RM124,900 for the top spec variant, making it an attractive option for first-time EV buyers.

Used EV Prices (2022–2025):

Okay. So now on the flip side we have a BYD Atto 3, with some models from 2023 listed around RM90,000 on average with some even going as low as RM85,000 on Carlist. Apparently depreciation hits EVs even harder than internal combustion engine (ICE) cars.

On top of that, the Tesla Model 3, with pre-owned 2023 variants available from RM145,000 on average. The lowest price unit I found on Carlist was RM129,000.

For those looking for a more luxurious option, the Porsche Taycan averages at about RM320,000 for models registered in 2023 with some even as low as RM299,000.

Now I used Carlist as I trust it a bit more than Mudah but there are certainly also some good deals to be had there so check it out if you want to. The gist of it is simple though. Cars depreciate over time and this is even more true for EVs so if you are willing to live with the worse battery health of a used EV, then do get one, if you want a healthier battery, buy a new one instead.
