The Jaecoo J8 is the next product launch on the horizon for the Chinese brand.
One of the first Jaecoo products to be previewed early LAST year was the J8. They even allowed us to drive one in China the year before. We looked at it as a potential BMW X5/Mercedes-Benz GLE rival in the making, though of course without the same level of refinement or technical prowess or brand equity. That being said, if the Jaecoo J7 was able to find over 7,000 owners in less than 12 months of sales, it’s not unimaginable that a larger model following the same business strategy could also succeed.

Today, Jaecoo Malaysia brought the J8 out to 1Utama shopping mall to let the public get up close and personal with this larger, more upmarket SUV. Unlike the confusingly-named Omoda C9 by Jaecoo, the J8 wears straightforward branding.

It is powered by the same 2.0L four cyclinder turbocharged petrol engine capable of 183kW (about 250PS) and 385Nm of torque. It features an 8-speed automatic transmission. There are 2WD and AWD variants available and a claimed 450mm wading depth. The all-wheel drive version features Continuous Damping Control technology. So far, it’s looking a lot like the Omoda C9 by Jaecoo and there is indeed a lot of commonality between the two SUVs.

The Jaecoo J8 is larger though. It’s 1.71 meters tall, 1.93 meters wide and has a bumper-to-bumper length of 4.82 meters with a wheelbase of 2.82 meters. Compare that to the C9’s figures of 1.67 meters, 1.92 meters, 4.78 meters, and 2.8 meters and you can better see the positioning here.

What’s more, the Jaecoo J8 is available with a 3-row option. The standard model is the 2WD 5-seater, but the AWD model has a 6-seater configuration. The 5-seater has a 738L boot while those who opt for the 6-seater have to make do with just 200L. Besides that, the 2WD model is only available in single-tone colours while the AWD model gets the two-tone treatment. Colour options for both are Carbon Crystal Black, Khaki White, and Olive Grey. Expect the 2WD to be priced at around RM195,000 and the AWD model to be priced at RM220,000.
