Iconic F1 Team Owner And Legend Eddie Jordan Passed Away At 76

It is a sad day indeed for car enthusiasts and F1 fans alike as Eddie Jordan has passed

Formula 1 fans and car enthusiasts will have to start the day with some bad news today as Eddie Jordan, the iconic former Formula 1 team owner, has tragically passed away at the age of 76 yesterday. A man known for more than just his contributions to the motorsports scene, Jordan leaves behind a storied legacy that encompasses all sectors in life, not just motorsports.

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Jordan first rose to prominence as a driver in the 1970s, securing success in the Irish Kart Championship before competing in Formula Ford, Formula 3 and Formula 2. He also drove in the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans, showcasing his driving talent across a variety of racing disciplines.

Moreover, in the late 70s, Jordan shifted from racing to team ownership, founding his own eponymous team in 1980 and later securing an entry into Formula 1 in 1991. During that season, Jordan famously gave Michael Schumacher his F1 debut, marking the start of a career that would shape the future of the sport.

One of the defining moments of Jordan’s F1 career came in 1998, when Damon Hill secured the team’s first Grand Prix victory at the rain-soaked Belgian Grand Prix. Hill’s win was followed by a sensational 1-2 finish with Ralf Schumacher, cementing Jordan’s place in F1 history. Jordan enjoyed further success in 1999 with Heinz-Harald Frentzen before the team’s final win in 2003.

On top of that, after selling his F1 team in 2005, Jordan remained a prominent figure in motorsport, transitioning to a successful career as an F1 pundit. His lively commentary on the BBC, including breaking the news of Lewis Hamilton’s switch to Mercedes, paired with his larger than life personality, kept people coming back.

Jordan’s influence extended beyond motorsports as he managed Adrian Newey, helping the renowned F1 designer transition from Red Bull to Aston Martin. Outside of racing, Jordan was an aficionado of music, forming his own band and playing the drums and spoons. He also enjoyed golf, cycling and the arts, as well as a broad portfolio of business interests.

Eddie Jordan passed away peacefully on 20 March 2025, after a year-long battle with prostate cancer. He was surrounded by his family in Cape Town and their statement highlighted his enduring charisma, energy and Irish charm, and they expressed deep sorrow at his passing. How do you feel about the passing of this F1 legend?
