TNB And BHPetrol Launch New EV Charging Station To Promote Green Energy

While the EV charger goal is far from being a reality, TNB is at least taking first steps

In a significant step towards a sustainable future, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Boustead Petroleum Marketing Sdn. Bhd. (BHPetrol) have inaugurated a new electric vehicle (EV) charging station at BHPetrol Jalan Genting Klang 1. Well, the Government’s goals for how many EV chargers we need are far from reality, but at least this is a good addition.

The launch marks the first collaboration between the two companies in developing EV charging infrastructure under the TNB Electron brand. This partnership is part of a shared vision to promote clean energy and support Malaysia’s transition to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy system.

Moreover, the new station is equipped with TNB’s high-speed 200 kWh DC charging unit, making it the first location in the TNB Electron network to feature this advanced technology. The development of this station is a key step in expanding EV infrastructure, enabling easier access to efficient and eco-friendly charging solutions for EV users.

As TNB’s president, Datuk Ir. Megat Jalaluddin Bin Megat Hassan, noted in his speech, the collaboration between TNB and BHPetrol is an important part of both organizations’ goals to reduce carbon emissions and contribute to Malaysia’s net zero carbon target.

Datuk Ir. Megat also emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative, highlighting how the synergies between TNB and BHPetrol align with the national agenda for the promotion of clean and sustainable energy. The new charging station is expected to provide 1,200 MWh of charging energy over the next five years, which will significantly reduce carbon emissions.

On top of that, it is projected that the charging station will cut 460 metric tons of CO2 emissions, a figure equivalent to planting 7,808 saplings or preserving 474 acres of forest for five years. This collaboration also sets the stage for future developments.

BHPetrol has announced plans to expand its network with additional charging bays at locations such as BHPetrol Karak-KL and BHPetrol Ladang Bikam in the north. These new sites will provide EV users along long-distance routes with more opportunities to access environmentally friendly charging stations, further supporting the widespread adoption of EVs.

Datuk Ir. Megat expressed his gratitude to BHPetrol for their trust in TNB’s expertise in green energy infrastructure. As EVs become more popular in Malaysia, TNB and BHPetrol’s collaboration is a vital step towards ensuring that the necessary infrastructure is in place to support this growing market and to achieve the nation’s environmental goals.
