MYZEVA released its assessment of the EV sales data and the Proton e.MAS 7 is a winner.
The electric vehicle (EV) market in Malaysia continues to gain traction, with an increasing number of consumers making the switch to sustainable mobility. According to data from the Malaysia Zero Emission Vehicle Association (MYZEVA), the top 10 best-selling EV models in January 2025 highlight a strong demand for both local and international brands.

Proton e.MAS7 Dominates the Market
Topping the list with a staggering 24% market share is the Proton e.MAS7, Malaysia’s ‘homegrown’ electric SUV. The overwhelming success of this model suggests that local consumers are keen to support national brands while benefiting from the vehicle’s cutting-edge technology, affordability, and strong government incentives.

BYD Strengthens Its Presence in Malaysia
Chinese automaker BYD continues to solidify its position as a key player in Malaysia’s EV market, securing three spots on the list:
- BYD Sealion 7 – 9%
- BYD M6 – 8%
- BYD Atto 3 – 6%
- BYD Seal – 5%

The popularity of BYD’s models can be attributed to their competitive pricing, long-range battery performance, and growing after-sales support in Malaysia. What’s interesting is that the Sealion 7, which is more expensive and launched later than the M6, is doing better in sales. That shows us that EVs are indeed ‘toys’ for the rich when it comes to our market conditions.
Luxury EVs Make an Impact
Premium EV brands are also gaining traction, with BMW, Xpeng, Zeekr, Mini, and Porsche making the list. The BMW i5, holding 6% of the market, reflects a growing preference for luxury electric sedans. Meanwhile, the Xpeng G6 (5%) and Zeekr 009 (5%) demonstrate that high-tech Chinese EVs are attracting more Malaysian buyers.

Luxury brands Mini Countryman (3%) and Porsche Macan (3%) round off the top 10, catering to customers who seek premium electric SUVs with top-tier performance and style.
