Ford Ranger XLT Plus Special Edition Review: Value-Added Workhorse

The Ford Ranger XLT Plus Special Edition is all the pick-up truck you’ll ever need.

The Ford Ranger has long been a cornerstone of the pickup truck segment, but with the XLT Plus Special Edition, Ford has created something truly remarkable. This limited-production variant, with only 300 units available in Malaysia, represents a perfect fusion of utilitarian capability and modern comfort that deserves a closer look, especially when you consider how much value for money you get.

Performance and Capability

At the heart of the XLT Plus Special Edition lies the same powerhouse that drives its more expensive Wildtrak sibling – a 2.0L bi-turbo diesel engine producing an impressive 210PS and 500Nm of torque. This is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and Electronic Shift-on-the-fly 4WD system, delivering exceptional performance both on and off the road.

What’s particularly noteworthy is the engine’s efficiency. Despite its considerable power output, our real-world testing has shown fuel consumption figures around 12L/100km under regular conditions. This balance of performance and efficiency makes it an excellent choice for both work and daily driving.

Chassis and Engineering Improvements

There are plenty of other advantages of the new generation Ranger to consider that aren’t specific to this variant, but are there anyway. The all-new generation Ranger platform offers significant improvements to the driving experience over the last one.

Ford has extended the wheelbase and widened the track, while redesigning the suspension frame rails to deliver more car-like handling characteristics. These changes fundamentally transform how the truck feels on the road, making it more accessible to drivers transitioning from passenger vehicles.

Besides that, the cargo box has been thoughtfully enhanced with a 50mm width increase and features a robust plastic-molded bedliner and load box capping, protecting both paint and sheet metal from the rigors of daily use.

Two 240V 400W power sockets in the cargo area add versatility for both work applications and recreational activities.

The addition of a rear box step behind the wheels demonstrates Ford’s attention to practical usability, making cargo access notably easier.

Interior Comfort and Technology

Inside, the XLT Plus Special Edition showcases how far pickup trucks have evolved. The driver is greeted by a digital instrument cluster and a sophisticated 10.1-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen display featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

The inclusion of dual-zone climate control further enhances comfort, while advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) including Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) bring modern safety features to this segment.

Special Edition Aesthetics

What sets this Special Edition apart is its distinctive styling that draws inspiration from the range-topping Raptor model.

The package includes matte black fender flares with rivets and a matching matte black sports bar, creating a more aggressive appearance. Custom decal packs for the hood and sides complete the exterior enhancement.

Interior upgrades include illuminated scuff plates and integrated pull-out cup holders sourced directly from Ford, adding both functionality and premium touch points to the cabin.

Value Proposition

Priced at RM143,888 in Peninsular Malaysia and RM149,388 in East Malaysia, the XLT Plus Special Edition represents exceptional value, particularly considering its proximity to Wildtrak-level specifications while maintaining a sub-RM150,000 price point. The comprehensive package of performance, technology, and special edition features makes it an attractive proposition for buyers seeking a premium pickup experience without the premium price tag.

That being said, the Special Edition does come with some restrictions. Colour options are limited to Meteor Grey and Absolute Black, which may disappoint those drawn to the more vibrant options available in Wildtrak and Raptor variants. Additionally, the limited production run of 300 units means availability could be a concern for interested buyers.

Final Verdict

The Ford Ranger XLT Plus Special Edition successfully bridges the gap between work-oriented pickup trucks and lifestyle vehicles. It offers a compelling blend of capability, comfort, and style that would have been unimaginable in the segment just a few years ago. While the limited availability and color restrictions might give some buyers pause, the overall package represents excellent value for those seeking a versatile pickup that can handle both work duties and daily driving with equal aplomb.

Ford Ranger XLT Plus Special

For buyers in the market for a pickup truck that doesn’t compromise on features or capability while maintaining a reasonable price point, the Ford Ranger XLT Plus Special Edition should be at the top of their consideration list. It successfully demonstrates how far the pickup segment has evolved.
