There are very obvious signs that a vehicle is not road legal, does this lorry display them?
A surprise inspection by the Road Transport Department (RTD) at the Wangsa Maju Puspakom centre uncovered a disturbing issue: an unsafe vehicle had passed its inspection, prompting swift action from authorities. During the operation, RTD officers found a significant number of lorries with unsafe retreaded tyres waiting in line for their inspections.
This discovery led to the launch of a nationwide enforcement initiative called “Ops Gempur Puspakom,” which is part of a four-phase program aimed at tightening safety standards for commercial vehicles. The operation was ordered by the Transport Minister and aims to address recent incidents involving commercial vehicles.
Moreover, RTD Senior Director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan emphasized the importance of the operation, stating that it is crucial for ensuring stricter compliance with safety regulations. He confirmed that Puspakom’s supervisor and staff responsible for approving the unsafe vehicle had been summoned for questioning, and an investigation is underway.
Updates on the case will be provided once more information is available. One of the key findings of the inspection was the presence of numerous lorries with unsafe retreaded tyres, which are highly prone to bursting while on the road.
The Transport Ministry’s secretary-general, Datuk Jana Santhiran Muniayan, also expressed concern over the safety risk posed by these tyres and instructed Puspakom’s CEO to take immediate action. Left unaddressed, these tyres could lead to serious accidents.
On top of that, at the Wangsa Maju Puspakom centre alone, RTD officers inspected 115 lorries by noon, issuing enforcement actions on 29 vehicles, serving 69 notices, and impounding seven vehicles, including five cars and two lorries, within just two and a half hours.
He acknowledged the findings of the inspection and pledged that any misconduct, including corruption, would be dealt with severely. He also emphasized that vehicle owners play a crucial role in ensuring their vehicles remain roadworthy. So, with retreaded tyres being flagged as unsafe, one must ask: is your vehicle truly road legal?
