Nissan e-POWER Hybrid Cruises Past 1.5 Million Units Mark

Nissan e-POWER hybrid tech is coming to Malaysia as global production hits 1.5 million units.

Nissan’s innovative e-POWER technology is set to make its Malaysian debut by the end of 2024, marking a significant milestone as the Japanese automaker announces its global e-POWER vehicle production has surpassed 1.5 million units. This groundbreaking hybrid powertrain technology, which delivers an authentic electric vehicle driving experience without the need for external charging, has already captured significant market share in key regions worldwide.

What Makes e-POWER Different?

Unlike conventional hybrid systems, Nissan’s e-POWER technology features a unique powertrain configuration where the electric motor is the sole source of power to the wheels. The system combines a small-capacity petrol engine with a lithium-ion battery to generate electricity, which then powers the electric motor. This innovative approach delivers the instant torque and smooth acceleration characteristic of pure electric vehicles while eliminating range anxiety.

Global Success Story

The success of e-POWER technology is evident in its impressive market penetration. In Japan, where the technology first debuted with the Note e-POWER in 2016, nearly half (42.6%) of all Nissan vehicles sold in fiscal year 2023 featured this innovative powertrain. The technology has since expanded to multiple vehicle segments, including popular models like the X-Trail SUVs and the Serena MPV.

Currently available in 68 markets worldwide, e-POWER has achieved remarkable production milestones across different regions:

  • Japan: 1,170,000 units
  • Europe: 140,000 units
  • China: 60,000 units
  • Other markets: 150,000 units

European Market Performance

The European market has shown strong acceptance of e-POWER technology since its introduction in 2022. The Qashqai and X-Trail e-POWER models have collectively achieved sales exceeding 100,000 units as of January 2024, demonstrating the technology’s appeal in one of the world’s most demanding automotive markets.

Malaysian Market Potential

As Malaysia prepares for the arrival of e-POWER technology on the upcoming Kicks, the timing couldn’t be better. With growing environmental awareness and increasing fuel prices, Malaysian consumers are actively seeking vehicles that offer both efficiency and performance. Nissan’s e-POWER technology presents a practical solution for Malaysian drivers who want to experience electric vehicle benefits without concerns about charging infrastructure.
