Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius showed off the next-gen CLA himself
Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius recently unveiled a glimpse of the next-generation CLA, slated for debut in 2025. During a test drive at the brand’s exclusive test facility, Källenius sat down with host Sarah Harman to discuss the prototype, offering insights into the model’s key features and its pivotal role in shaping the future of Mercedes-Benz’s entry-level segment.
As the first vehicle in a new family of models, the upcoming CLA will set high standards for electric mobility, with a focus on cutting-edge performance, range, efficiency, and charging speed. Mercedes-Benz aims to offer buyers a choice of two powertrain options: a fully electric version with the latest drivetrain technology and a high-tech electrified combustion engine option.
Moreover, although the prototype was camouflaged during the test drive, Källenius provided several design teasers, including the sleek new headlight design, which hints at the car’s overall sporty and modern aesthetic. The all-electric CLA will draw heavily from Mercedes-Benz’s EQXX concept car, incorporating a next-generation electric drivetrain developed in-house.
This advanced system features a two-speed transmission, optimising both performance and efficiency to offer a refined driving experience. The electric version of the CLA is expected to provide a significant boost in range and charging capabilities compared to current models, continuing Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to leading the transition to electric vehicles.
In addition to the electric model, the new CLA will also offer a hybrid variant with a state-of-the-art 48V electrified powertrain. This hybrid option will feature an innovative transmission system that promises enhanced fuel efficiency, improved driving dynamics, and a more engaging driving experience.
On top of that, the combination of hybrid technology and a new transmission system is designed to offer a compelling alternative to the electric-only model, giving buyers more options in terms of performance and energy efficiency. One of the most notable updates for the next-generation CLA is the introduction of MB.OS, a new operating system that will power the car’s interface.
This system includes the next generation of Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX Virtual Assistant, which leverages artificial intelligence to provide a more intuitive and natural interaction between the driver and the car. With enhanced voice recognition and context-aware commands, MB.OS will represent a significant leap forward from the current “Hey Mercedes” system, improving ease of use and overall user experience.
Design-wise, the new CLA will incorporate elements from the Concept CLA Class, bringing a more modern, aerodynamic, and sporty look to the lineup. This reflects Mercedes-Benz’s broader shift toward a more tech-forward and environmentally conscious future, where electrification, sustainability, and advanced connectivity take centre stage.
