Chery Auto Malaysia has officially made its first locally assembled EV in the country

Chery Auto Malaysia recently celebrated a major milestone with the successful roll-off of the first Completely Knocked Down (CKD) unit of the Omoda E5 from its production line at the Inokom Plant.

This achievement underscores Chery’s ongoing commitment to enhancing local manufacturing capabilities, supporting Malaysia’s industrial growth and driving the nation’s transition to a more sustainable, electrified automotive future. The Omoda E5, a model known for its modern design and advanced technology, marks a key step in Chery’s strategy to deliver high-quality vehicles tailored to the preferences of Malaysian consumers.

Moreover, Leo Chen, President of Chery Auto Malaysia also stated, “The roll-off of Chery’s first CKD unit of the Omoda E5 highlights our commitment to innovation, quality, and long-term investment in the Malaysian market.” He emphasized that local assembly not only allows for more competitive pricing but also supports job creation and skill development within the local workforce, strengthening Chery’s footprint in Malaysia.

Leo Chen also pointed out that this initiative aligns with Malaysia’s localization policies and will help the country become a regional hub for electric vehicles (EVs). Dato’ Jeffri Salim Davidson, Group CEO of Sime Darby Berhad, noted that this milestone reflects the growing partnership between Sime Darby and Chery.

YB Liew Chin Tong, Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, also congratulated Chery for employing a workforce that is 99 percent Malaysian, emphasizing that the industrialization of Malaysia should focus on creating skilled, high-paying jobs for locals. He also highlighted that, as of September 2024, 98 percent  of the battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Malaysia are imported as Completely Built-Up (CBU) units, underlining the importance of localizing EV production.

On top of that, the Omoda E5 joins Chery’s growing lineup of locally assembled models, which includes the TIGGO 7 PRO, TIGGO 8 PRO, and Omoda 5. Launched in March, the Omoda E5 is Chery’s first fully electric model in Malaysia, featuring a 201-horsepower electric drivetrain, a 430km WLTP range and a 61kWh lithium iron phosphate battery that supports fast DC charging.

It also includes ADAS 2.5, an advanced suite of driver-assistance features and Chery Auto Malaysia remains committed to sustainability, with plans to expand its electric vehicle lineup in the coming year. The company’s global green strategy, which focuses on EV development and energy-efficient technologies, has driven a significant increase in its annual green revenue, reflecting Chery’s ongoing dedication to innovation and environmental responsibility.
