More Malaysians seem to be asking for the Sealion 6 DM-I but it might be the Sealion ……..
A teaser image of a brand new BYD SUV has been circulating on social media and Malaysians are reacting. Well, most Malaysians, who can afford this price range of new energy vehicles seem to be ‘leaning’ towards the plug-in hybrid Sealion 6 DM-I which has a 1.5L engine that delivers 218PS and a possible 92km of pure driving range.
With questionable battery charging points being deployed around the country (well we have a good number already, but it is not adequate for long weekend traffic movement around Malaysia as we have seen in the last year during Chinese New Year, Hari Raya and more recently Deepavali), middle class Malaysians who take to the highways every long weekend prefer a plug-in hybrid over a full electric car.
Now, it was just recently, August 2024 actually when BYD launched the Sealion Hybrid in Thailand, signaling a Malaysian launch in the very near future. Priced in Thailand from 939,900 Baht (about RM120,000), the BYD Sealion 6 DM-i is positioned as a premium offering in the hybrid market. This price point reflects the advanced technology and premium features packed into this vehicle.
Now, please note that BYD has a factory in Rayong Province, Thailand capable of churning a maximum of 150,000 BYD new energy vehicles a year.
Meanwhile, we at www.dsf.my would like to guesstimate that BYD Malaysia will be launching the BYD Sealion 7 (not the 6) which is a full electric vehicle with CTB 800V technology that provides 540km of driving range, a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 7.3 seconds and a possible top speed of 210km/h. All this from its base version. There are other variants of the Sealion 7 with better range and faster acceleration.
What do you think, Sealion 7 or Sealion 6 is coming?
