See why the Nissan e-POWER system is much more impressive than you think
Developed entirely in-house, Nissan’s e-POWER has emerged as a cornerstone of the company’s electrification strategy, standing alongside battery electric vehicles. Since its debut in Japan in 2016, this proprietary drive system has captivated customers and industry experts alike with its distinctive combination of electric motor-driven performance and exceptional fuel efficiency.
The e-POWER system was first introduced as a powertrain option for the Nissan Note in November 2016. Its 100 percent electric motor-driven performance resonated with Japanese consumers, leading it to become the best-selling compact car in 2017 and the top-selling car overall in 2018.
Moreover, the innovative technology behind e-POWER garnered the prestigious Chairman’s Prize at the Energy Conservation Grand Prize Awards in 2017, recognizing its significant contributions to reducing CO₂ emissions.
In 2020, the Kicks e-POWER launched in Japan, winning the 2021 Technology of the Year award from RJC and being named one of the ‘6 Best Cars of the Year.’ The Kicks showcased not only powerful performance and quiet operation but also a sporty design that appealed to both critics and consumers.
The overwhelming success of e-POWER in Japan led to the exclusive use of this system in the all-new Nissan Note, which later won the Japan Car of the Year 2021-2022 award. The judges noted its low noise levels and outstanding performance, showcasing the advancements made with the second-generation e-POWER system.
On top of that, building on its success, Nissan introduced the Kicks e-POWER in Thailand in 2020, marking the first e-POWER model launched outside Japan. This compact crossover, equipped with the innovative 100 percent electric motor-driven system, paved the way for electrification in the ASEAN region, subsequently launching in Indonesia and Singapore.
While numerous awards reflect e-POWER’s technological advancements, the real reward lies in the driving experience. Owners enjoy the thrill of electric motor power without the anxiety of charging, knowing that every drop of fuel is utilised efficiently. As evidence of its growing appeal, global sales of e-POWER vehicles surpassed 1.2 million units, with plans for further expansion into new markets.
Nissan’s e-POWER system is unique, utilising a petrol engine to charge its battery and power an electric motor for driving, delivering instant torque without range anxiety. Compared to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, e-POWER offers lower emissions and operating costs while promoting energy recovery through regenerative braking.
