Will the new Mazda BT-50 with the largest badge on any Mazda ever come to Malaysia?
Mazda has just released an enticing teaser for the facelifted BT-50, and oh boy is it sexy. Expected to debut on 18 October in Australia, this midsize pickup truck is set to undergo a significant transformation, incorporating both styling and technological improvements bringing it closer in styling to the competition.
The current generation Mazda BT-50 made its debut in 2020, and while it received minor updates for the 2024 model year, the 2025 iteration promises a far more substantial overhaul. Mazda has described this upcoming release as a “comprehensive redesign inside-out,” signalling that consumers can expect more than just a few cosmetic tweaks.
Moreover, the teaser image focuses on the front of the vehicle, highlighting sharper LED headlights that draw inspiration from the Mazda CX-5’s sleek design. Complementing this new look is a redesigned grille, and a notably larger Mazda badge, which could very well be the biggest emblem ever featured on a production model from the brand.
Beyond its striking exterior, the BT-50 is poised to receive several functional upgrades. These enhancements include a revamped user interface, an array of advanced safety features, and an increase in tech features. Since the BT-50 is essentially a rebadged Isuzu D-Max, which also recently got a facelift, its improvements are likely the same ones.
It is also likely that the BT-50 will inherit the D-Max’s impressive 7-inch digital instrument cluster, updated switchgear positioned below the 9-inch infotainment screen, additional USB-C ports for modern connectivity, and the convenience of remote engine start. It may include Isuzu’s Rough Terrain Mode, which optimises traction in challenging off-road conditions.
On top of that, under the hood, the powertrain options will largely remain unchanged. The outgoing BT-50 is equipped with a choice of a 1.9-litre turbodiesel engine making 148hp or a more powerful 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine producing 187hp. These engines are paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission, though only the latter is sold here.
In the Australian market, the Mazda BT-50 is the brand’s second-best-selling model, behind only the CX-5 SUV. However, it has struggled to gain traction in markets like New Zealand and South Africa, leading to its withdrawal from those regions. So will Mazda bring this new BT-50 here in Malaysia? I sure hope so.
