Demand For New DIESEL Cars Growing Faster Than Demand For Electric Cars

Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said registrations of new diesel cars in September 2024 for private buyers grew by 17.1% in UK

What! This news cannot be true…..right? Demand for smelly, fowl, bad for the environment, blah blah blah and more is rising faster than the demand for battery powered electric cars which produce no emissions when being driven, but produce tonnes of emissions when they are being produced?

Well, it seems that the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) which is from England has just released a statement saying that registrations of new diesel cars for private buyers in September 2024 grew by 17.1 percent compared with the same month in 2023, which is up by 1,367 units.

Interestingly, this is in comparison with a very small 3.6 percent year-on-year rise for pure battery electric vehicles, which is just 410 units, and all this comes after heavy discounting (which was published just yesterday) by electric cars manufacturers.

Incidentally, even in Malaysia, there is heavy discounting of electric cars to ‘persuade’ car buyers to take ownership of an electric car as we have seen in the past 6 months.

Meanwhile, we have more and more Chinese EV manufacturers moving slightly away from building only electric cars as they start introducing ‘Plug-In Hybrid’ cars like the Haval H6 PHEV and also pure petrol powered cars like the MG5 sedan around the world.

Diesel

Now, the next question you might have have is, which car manufacturer is still producing diesel powered vehicles? Well, despite all the ‘drama meetings’ by EU legislators on the need to have only electric cars on European roads, BMW in June 2024 released a diesel powered 4th generation 1 Series and Audi in July 2024 released a Audi A5 with a diesel 48-volt MHEV powertrain.

Then, lets not forget how Volvo Cars pulled the plug on their all electric ‘ONLY’ ambitions and released a brand new XC90 PHEV.

So, it looks like the future car showroom in Europe will have diesel, petrol and battery powered vehicles on sale side by side in coming years.
