The 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé Facelift: Enhanced Design and Performance
The 2 Series Gran Coupé has been quite the success story, at least in Malaysia where BMW has marketed it as the new entry-level 4-door to go up against the Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan. Part of its appeal is that it features coupé-inspired styling with a raked roof, frameless windows and slim taillights. Its pricing is also rather attractive, so it served as a substitute to the base model 3 Series from the previous generation. Now it is getting its first major facelift for the 2025 model year.
Exterior Design Updates
The facelifted 2 Series Gran Coupé showcases a more expressive front section, featuring a wider BMW kidney grille positioned below the headlights. The grille now sports an innovative structure with vertical and diagonal bars. Standard LED headlights include vertical elements for daytime running lights and turn indicators, while adaptive LED headlights with matrix high beam are available as an option.
The vehicle’s dimensions have been slightly modified, with an increase in length by 20mm to 4,546mm and a height increase of 25mm to 1,445mm. The width remains unchanged at 1,800mm, and the wheelbase continues to measure 2,670mm.
BMW has expanded the exterior color options, now offering two solid and seven metallic finishes, along with four BMW Individual finishes and numerous special finishes. A contrasting high-gloss black roof is also available as an option.
Interior Enhancements and Technology
The interior of the new 2 Series Gran Coupé is now leather-free as standard, with optional Veganza/Alcantara trim featuring hand-sewn contrasting seams on the instrument panel.
The cabin boasts a BMW Curved Display and a redesigned gear selector, emphasizing its progressive character.
Seating comfort has been improved with newly designed seats, and various options such as sports seats, M sports seats, seat heating, and electric adjustment are available.
The rear seat offers a standard 40:20:40 split, and the trunk capacity is 430 liters for most models (360 liters for the 220 and 220d variants).
Powertrain and Performance
The 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé introduces a new generation of engines. The lineup includes:
- BMW 220 Gran Coupé: 4-cylinder petrol engine, 125 kW/170 hp
- BMW 220d Gran Coupé: 4-cylinder diesel engine, 120 kW/163 hp
- BMW 218d Gran Coupé: 4-cylinder diesel engine, 110 kW/150 hp
- BMW M235 xDrive Gran Coupé: 4-cylinder engine, 221 kW/300 hp (0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds)
All engines come standard with a 7-speed Steptronic double-clutch transmission. The 220 and 220d models feature 48-volt mild hybrid technology for improved efficiency. That’s right, three major things to note: there’s no EV at launch, there’s no 3-cylinder 218i at launch and the ‘i’ moniker for petrol variants is well and truly dead, though this is not the first time BMW are doing that.
Chassis and Suspension Upgrades
The facelifted model benefits from increased body rigidity and refined chassis components, resulting in improved agility, steering precision, and cornering dynamics. The suspension features optimized kinematics and new shock absorber technology. An adaptive M suspension is standard on the M235 xDrive and optional for other variants, lowering the vehicle by up to 8mm and including sports steering.
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
The 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé comes standard with an array of driver assistance features, including:
- Driving Assistant with front collision warning
- Lane Departure Warning
- Exit warning
- Speed Limit Info
- Parking Assistant with Reversing Assistant
Optional systems include Steering and Lane Control Assistant, automatic Speed Limit Assist, and Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function. The BMW 220 and 220d models can be equipped with Parking Assistant Professional, allowing smartphone-controlled parking maneuvers via the My BMW app.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The facelifted model introduces BMW iDrive with QuickSelect, based on BMW Operating System 9. This system offers intuitive operation through touch functions, voice control, and steering wheel buttons. Standard equipment includes BMW Live Cockpit Plus with cloud-based BMW Maps navigation.
Additional features available through BMW ConnectedDrive upgrades include:
- BMW Digital Premium with entertainment services
- Advanced navigation functions (Satellite View, 3D building display)
- Curve-Ahead View for the optional BMW Head-Up Display
The 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé also supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, as well as the BMW Digital Key Plus function for compatible smartphones and smartwatches.
