While the Toyota Tundra is traditionally for North America only, will it go global now?
Toyota’s full-size Tundra pickup is set to launch in Australia in November 2024, following the successful completion of a local re-engineering project approved by Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan. This initiative marks a significant milestone for Toyota Australia, as it has partnered with Walkinshaw Automotive Group to transform the US-built Tundra from left-hand drive to right-hand drive, with production occurring at Walkinshaw’s facility in Melbourne.
This collaboration represents Toyota’s first instance of working with a third-party organisation for such a conversion globally, culminating six years of development aimed at ensuring the right-hand drive Tundra adheres to Toyota’s rigorous standards of quality, durability, and reliability.
Moreover, Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia’s Vice President of Sales Marketing and Franchise Operations, emphasised the significance of this achievement, stating it sets a new benchmark for re-engineering quality while expanding customer choice.
Hanley acknowledged the teamwork involved, expressing gratitude to Walkinshaw, Toyota North America, and the hundreds of customers participating in the Tundra Insider Program, which has provided invaluable real-world feedback since its launch in September last year. “This massive effort has culminated in our final approval for a global first.” he added with pride.
Initially, the new Tundra will debut in a Limited grade, with a premium version expected to follow in Q2 2025. Both variants are also built on the proven TNGA-F platform that also underpins the LandCruiser 300 Series, powered by a robust 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 i-FORCE MAX engine, producing 326kW of power and 790Nm of torque, coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
On top of that, the vehicle boasts a part-time 4WD system with a dual-range transfer case and an impressive 4.5-tonne braked towing capacity. The Limited model will be well-equipped, featuring 20-inch alloy wheels, LED lights, leather-accented seats with power adjustments, heating and ventilation for front passengers, a 14-inch multimedia touchscreen and a premium 12-speaker JBL audio system.
Additionally, it offers wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto compatibility, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual-zone climate control, and a trailer brake controller. The upcoming premium grade will showcase unique exterior elements, including a distinctive grille, black-painted alloy wheels, and a panoramic moonroof, while elevating interior luxury with leather-accented seats that include a massage function and a heated steering wheel.
So since th4 Toyota Tundra is now going to also be available in RHD and in Australia, will Malaysia be next?
