New Volvo XC90 Revealed, Hybrid With Over 70km Of Electric Range

Volvo has unveiled the new XC90, enhancing its flagship hybrid SUV with significant updates in both technology and design. This premium seven-seater, renowned for its comfort and safety, is now even more refined.
The latest model features an improved plug-in hybrid system, offering over 70km of electric-only range under the WLTP testing cycle, allowing many drivers to complete daily trips with zero tailpipe emissions. On longer journeys, the XC90’s hybrid powertrain, which includes an efficient petrol engine, extends the range to over 800km, ensuring versatility with both all-wheel drive and off-road capabilities.
Moreover, the new XC90 showcases a contemporary exterior design, aligning with Volvo’s shift towards full electrification and incorporating elements from its latest electric models. Inside, the SUV boasts a revamped interior that integrates advanced user experience features from the new EX90 and EX30 electric cars.
A larger, high-resolution central touchscreen enhances functionality with new features and over-the-air software updates. Volvo Cars CEO Jim Rowan emphasises the XC90’s blend of comfort, luxury, and hybrid efficiency, noting its continued popularity and significance in Volvo’s lineup.
The XC90, alongside Volvo’s fully electric models, offers a balanced product portfolio that bridges current market needs with a future-focused approach to electrification. The XC90’s safety features remain a hallmark, including an advanced safety cage and a suite of active safety technologies.
On top of that, it can detect lane departures, assist in avoiding collisions, and use braking and steering interventions to prevent accidents with vehicles, pedestrians, and animals. Comfort is a priority, with standard improvements in ride quality and suspension. The new XC90 includes adaptable dampers for better comfort and stability, and an optional air suspension system that adjusts the vehicle’s height and enhances the driving experience.
Additional cabin features include premium recycled materials, practical storage solutions, and the option of a high-fidelity Bowers & Wilkins audio system for an exceptional auditory experience. For those seeking alternative powertrains, the XC90 also offers mild-hybrid petrol variants, the B5 and B6, which use a 48V battery to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions by up to 15 percent.
The new Volvo XC90 is available for order now, with production set to begin in late 2024 and first customer deliveries expected towards the end of the year. The model’s updates reflect Volvo’s commitment to advancing its vehicle lineup while maintaining the core values of safety, comfort, and environmental responsibility.
