3rd Generation Audi Q5 Debuts With Hybrid Powertrains As Standard

The all-new Audi Q5 arrives: A Blend of Sportiness, Efficiency, and Modern Technology

Audi’s latest offering, the third-generation Q5 SUV, marks a significant evolution in the midsize luxury SUV segment, combining advanced technology, refined design, and enhanced performance. In Malaysia, the Audi Q5 enjoyed limited success in the parallel import market starting in 2009 and peaking around 2013 with 95 units registered in a single month before its popularity dropped off sharply. By 2017, new registrations had dropped to just single digits monthly. That being said, the Q5 has been one of Audi’s most popular models globally and following over 15 years of success, the latest iteration is designed to uphold its legacy while setting new standards in its class.

Platform and Powertrain Advancements

The new Audi Q5 is built on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), the same platform used for the Audi A5 models. This new platform architecture not only supports Audi’s commitment to high technical standards but also allows for greater flexibility in designing high-volume models. The Audi Q5 is now equipped with improved powertrains featuring MHEV plus technology, which integrates a 48-volt electrical system to enhance fuel efficiency, reduce CO2 emissions, and improve driving comfort. This system supports short bursts of additional power—up to 24 hp—and enables limited electric-only driving for maneuvers like parking.

Three engine variants will be available at launch in Europe: a 2.0 TFSI with 204 PS and 340 Nm of torque, a 2.0 TDI with 204 PS and 400 Nm of torque, and the high-performance Audi SQ5 with a 3.0-liter V6 TFSI producing 367PS and 550 Nm. The entry-level 2.0 TFSI comes with front-wheel drive, while the 2.0 TDI and SQ5 feature Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive. All variants use a 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission.

Design and Practicality

Externally, the new Audi Q5 presents a sportier, more dynamic appearance. It features a high, wide Singleframe grille and sculptural headlights that enhance its assertive stance. The vehicle’s profile is marked by a high shoulder line that visually elongates the SUV, while the rear is defined by a minimalistic design and a three-dimensional light strip.

The Q5’s design not only serves aesthetic purposes but also enhances practicality. The fully adjustable rear seat can slide and tilt, optimizing trunk space or passenger comfort as needed. With the rear seats folded, the cargo area expands to a maximum of 1,473 liters. Other practical features include an inductive charging tray with 15 watts of power, USB-C ports with varying capacities, and a larger storage compartment under the center armrest.

Interior Innovation and Technology

Inside, the Q5 is all about modernity and functionality. The dashboard layout emphasizes clarity with a horizontal design that integrates a high-quality application running the full width of the control panel. The centerpiece of the interior is the “Digital Stage,” which includes the 11.9-inch Audi virtual cockpit and the 14.5-inch MMI touch display. An optional 10.9-inch MMI Passenger Display with Active Privacy Mode allows front passengers to interact with the infotainment system without distracting the driver.

The interior also incorporates Audi’s “Material Driven Design” philosophy, using sustainable materials such as Kaskade textile upholstery and Dinamica fabric made from recycled polyester. This approach combines functionality with a high level of comfort, creating a spacious and homely ambiance.

Lighting and Driver Assistance

Audi continues to lead in lighting technology with the Q5. The new model features second-generation digital OLED rear lights, which offer enhanced safety through increased visibility and a range of customizable light signatures. The front lighting includes an active digital light signature that dynamically adjusts to various driving conditions, enhancing both aesthetics and safety.

The Q5 is also equipped with an extensive array of driver assistance systems, including standard features like rear parking aid, cruise control, and lane departure warning. Optional packages further enhance safety and convenience, offering features such as Adaptive Driving Assistant plus, Active Front Assist, and Park Assist plus.

Performance and Comfort

The driving dynamics of the new Q5 are tuned to provide a balance of sportiness and comfort. Standard features include dynamically tuned steel suspension, with an optional sports suspension for enhanced handling. The new model also offers adaptive air suspension, which can be adjusted through Audi drive select to tailor the driving experience between comfort and sport modes.

Market Launch and Pricing

The all-new Audi Q5 will be available for order in Germany from September 2024, with deliveries expected to start in the first quarter of 2025. The base model starts at €52,300, while the quattro variant is priced from €54,650 and the high-performance Audi SQ5 starts at €82,900. Will one of these come to Malaysia via PHSAM? We sure hope so.
