Will This Tesla Be Repaired Or Written Off

Electric vehicles like this Tesla are expensive to fix and we wonder what will happen to this car

Electric Vehicles (EVs) right now are cheaper to purchase than internal combustion (ICE) vehicles because they are completely TAX FREE (for now) however they have a more complex electrical system and very expensive internal components, specifically their motor running parts and battery pack.

Interestingly, the cost of spare parts and the limited number of qualified service centers and technicians contributes to the higher cost of insurance premiums for EVs than petrol or diesel vehicles.

So, when you see an electric car ‘smashed’ up like this Tesla Model Y, we wonder if it will be fixed or not as the cost of repair might be as much as a brand new car and then we wonder, what will happen to this accident vehicle. Where will it be stored and what happens to its hardly used very expensive battery pack which looks like it is not damaged.

Workshops that specialize in Electric Vehicles should look for batteries that:

  • Are dented, punctured or cracked on the outer shell
  • Are leaking fluid from the battery pack
  • Have water damage or corrosion on the terminals
  • Have loose wiring inside the battery pack or sticking out from the pack
  • Show signs the battery was opened and worked on

Meanwhile, it must be noted that some Malaysian electric vehicle accidents or mishaps are not being shared as these car EV’s imported in by private car importers have NO warranty and after sales which means they could be prone to issues that the Malaysian EV buyer will have no knowledge.

Did you know that Reuters recently shared an interesting article about rising insurance premiums for electric vehicles like this Tesla and how the recycling of electric car batteries is not going on as much as promised by the European Union and North America.

For many electric vehicles, there is no way to repair or assess even slightly damaged battery packs after accidents, forcing insurance companies to write off cars with few miles – leading to higher premiums and undercutting gains from going electric.

And now those battery packs (even from Tesla) are piling up in scrapyards in some countries, a previously unreported and expensive gap in what was supposed to be a “circular economy.”
