The Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 arrives in Malaysia for the local fanbase.
50 years is a long time in the automotive industry but that’s how long the iconic Golf has been around. To celebrate this milestone, Volkswagen launched the Golf GTI Edition 50 in February of this year. Now, 6 months later, local distributors Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) have introduced it to Malaysia for the price of RM267,990.
The Golf Edition 50 adds a few accessories including an Oettinger body kit, 18″ “Pretoria” alloy rims in high-gloss black (not “Leeds” as shown at the global debut), black side mirror caps, Edition 50 emblems, Edition 50 VW tint and some decals… that’s about it really for the outside. Inside, you get a “50” emblem at the centre spoke of the steering wheel, “Edition 50” aluminium side scuff plates and “Edition 50” front floor mats.
We pointed out just how minor the changes were back when it was first released. VPCM also notes that they’ve specified the car wit GTI Dynamic wheel hub caps and VW Design aluminium valve caps too. In Malaysia, the car can be ordered in either Oryx White and Moonstone Grey.
Arguably the largest change is with the Oettinger body kit, which includes a black front spoiler, a black roof spoiler and a diffuser. Volkswagen says the body kit is not a mere aesthetic enhancement but also adds to the car’s performance but did not elaborate on how it affects aero. That being said, Oettinger is a tuner partner of Volkswagen and have been around for decades and they do put their parts through wind tunnel testing.
Like the standard Golf GTI, this Edition 50 model comes with a 2.0L TSI turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine that’s paired to a 7-speed wet clutch DSG and has a total system output of 245PS and 370Nm of torque. Equipment includes a 10-speakers, 480W Harman Kardon sound system, a 10″ Discover Media infotainment system with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a 10.25″ digital instrument cluster, and IQ.Drive features such as Travel Assist with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Side Assist, Front Assist, Lane Assist and Head-up Display.
The Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 will be on display at the upcoming Golf Fan Fest on the 24th of August 2024 at the North Paddock of Sepang International Circuit and can be viewed at Volkswagen dealerships from the 17th of August 2024.
