Nissan e-POWER: The Electrified Solution Without Compromise

See how the Nissan e-POWER formula is the best electric option out there

In 2005, Nissan embarked on a strategic journey to achieve long-term carbon neutrality through a progressive adoption of electric vehicles. Nissan made a significant stride in 2010 by introducing the world’s first mass-produced BEV, the Nissan LEAF. Following this, Nissan rolled out its e-POWER models, a core component of its electrification strategy.

Unlike conventional hybrids, which rely heavily on petrol engines with limited electric assistance, e-POWER’s wheels are driven entirely by an electric motor. The system uses a petrol engine to power a generator, which charges the onboard lithium-ion battery.

Moreover, Nissan engineers adapted advanced components from the all-electric LEAF, such as its inverter and control systems, to infuse e-POWER with the electric vehicle essence, delivering instant torque response and smooth, quiet performance.

One of the standout features of e-POWER is its ability to minimise noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). The petrol engine operates discreetly, optimised to run only at its most efficient point to generate electricity.

e-POWER also stands out with its capability to deliver maximum performance by supplying power directly to the motor while simultaneously charging the battery. This feature, unique to e-POWER, differentiates it from traditional hybrid systems and eliminates the need for large, heavy battery packs.

On top of that, e-POWER employs a compact, high-power-density lithium-ion battery, maintaining comparable kerb weight to ICE models while offering superior weight distribution. The system’s 100% motor-driven design negates the need for a traditional transmission, reducing both weight and long-term maintenance costs.

In a landscape dominated by BEVs, Nissan’s e-POWER might appear as another hybrid system centred around an ICE. However, e-POWER provides an optimal blend of BEV performance and hybrid fuel efficiency. It delivers the thrills and refinement of an electric motor without range anxiety or the need for external charging.

e-POWER also features advanced engine and battery technologies, proprietary control systems, and intelligent features like e-Pedal Step for energy regeneration, making it a leader in hybrid efficiency compared to ICE-powered vehicles. For markets not ready for widespread BEV adoption, e-POWER offers a compelling, uncompromised solution.
