MG5 Previewed: Largest B-Sedan, 1 Variant Priced BELOW RM100,000

The MG5 B-segment sedan has been previewed in the Malaysian market with a sub-RM100,000 price.

SAIC Motor Malaysia today launched the MG5, a new B-segment segment designed to take on the likes of the Proton Persona, Honda City, Toyota Vios and Nissan Almera. The MG5 was launched concurrently with the MG HS – the first two ICE powered vehicles to be launched by MG in Malaysia. Earlier this year they introduced the MG4 and MG ES – two electric vehicles that are fully imported and benefit from tax-free pricing. SAIC indicates that they are in the early stage of CKD planning for Malaysia with order books already open and deliveries expected in October 2024. For now CBU models from Thailand will be introduced and the indicated pricing is tentative.

The MG5 sedan is aimed at making a splash in our market as the longest and widest B-segment sedan in our market measuring 4,675mm in length, 1,842mm in width, 1,480mm in height and 2,680mm in wheelbase. It also has 401L of boot space. The chassis is typical of the segment with independent MacPherson struts in front with a stabilizer bar with a torsion beam at the rear.

Powering the MG5 for Malaysia is a 1.5L 4-cylinder DOHC petrol engine with VTi-tech. This naturally-aspirated motor produces 114PS at 6,000rpm and 150Nm of torque at 4,500rpm. Power is sent to the front wheels via an ‘iCVT’ which features 8 virtual speeds.

The MG5 will be available in just one specification for the Malaysian market and is estimated to be priced below RM100,000 with actual pricing to be confirmed at launch.

Some of the equipment includes a powered sunroof, automatic LED headlights with daytime running lights, 17” “Tomahawk” alloy wheels, a 7” digital instrument cluster and a 10.25” floating infotainment system. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available. There’s also a 360-degree camera for parking. You’ll find 3 USB ports and 6 speakers in the MG5.

There’s a 3-spoke leather steering wheel as well as some ADAS functions including Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Assist, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross Collision Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. On top of the expected active safety equipment, you also get Cornering Brake controls and 6 airbags are standard on the MG5.

The indicated warranty package is generous at 5 years with no mileage cap for the entirety of the vehicle with a 7-year/unlimited mileage engine and transmission warranty as standard. The MG5 will be sold in 5 colours in Malaysia: Nuclear Yellow, Dynamic Red, Arctic White, Black Pearl and Camden Grey.
