I Drove The 2025 Proton X70 In Kota Kinabalu, Here Is My Quick Review

I had high expectations for the 2025 Proton X70 in Sabah, and the car did not disappoint

So from 27 to 29 August 2024, national carmaker Proton, had taken me on a fun trip to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah to test drive the new 2025 Proton X70 in a challenging yet scenic environment. So for the quick version before I go into details, I will simply say that my expectations for this SUV were already very high to begin with, and the car still amazed me all the same.

Now, interestingly, Proton has removed the AWD option from the 2025 Proton X70, yet the 1.5-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder engine still did not feel underpowered at any point. It was more than powerful enough to navigate the slopes and tough terrain of the harsh and steep roads in Sabah without any struggle.

Moreover, the interior has been given a much needed update and I personally love the grey nappa leather. The highlight was the “ambient lighting” system on the dashboard that does not blind or distract at all, even in the dark of night, unlike certain luxury cars. Personally, I like the simple layout and the “Hi Proton” voice assist was very helpful.

Now, this was my first time in Sabah and the roads took a bit of getting used to but even though I was in an unfamiliar setting, I was confident enough to drive the way I normally do in Peninsular Malaysia as the car felt stable and planted throughout. The only complaint I have is that I felt the seat was a bit too high even at its lowest setting but this is to be expected in family SUVs.

On top of that, I normally do not get a chance to drive much on media drives as most of my time is spent writing articles or my “carmates” would whisk the car away to shoot some videos. Luckily for me, my carmates this time around were more than happy to let me do the bulk of the driving and I loved every second of it as the car was so comfortable and smooth.

All in all, I would say my experience was more than pleasant, it was damn near perfect. Plus, I would also like to personally thank Proton and all its hard working and dedicated employees, especially the lucky few that got to stay with us in Sabah as they went above and beyond to make sure we were all comfortable and happy the entire time. I can’t wait for the next Proton media drive.
