GoSun Has A Lightweight Solar Panel You Can Fit On The Roof Of Your EV To Charge It

Perhaps this innovation from GoSun might just fix EV range problems here in Malaysia

While a fully solar-powered electric car may still be years away from becoming a reality for mass production, GoSun’s innovative EV Solar Charger represents a significant step towards that future. This lightweight, ‘bolt-on’ accessory is designed to fit any electric vehicle (EV) equipped with a roof rack.

With a power output of 1200 watts, the GoSun EV Solar Charger can, when deployed, generate enough clean energy to provide a solar-only range of up to 30 miles per day, covering the majority of daily driving needs for many American drivers. Charging an EV using solar power is an eco-friendly method, but it typically involves significant investment.

Moreover, a comprehensive home solar and battery system requires a substantial financial commitment for both the installation of the equipment and the home itself. This makes solar charging a challenging option for those without such setups.

However, the GoSun EV Solar Charger aims to simplify this by offering an aftermarket solution that can be easily added to any vehicle with a roof rack. Weighing approximately 32kg, the EV Solar Charger can be mounted on a vehicle in just 20 minutes, according to GoSun. Its streamlined design is engineered to minimise aerodynamic drag, ensuring that its impact on the vehicle’s range is kept to a minimum.

On top of that, the unit is robust enough to handle driving speeds of up to 100 MPH and can withstand wind speeds of up to 30 MPH when deployed. Additionally, when the solar array is in use, it helps to partially shade the vehicle, keeping the interior cooler while parked in the sun. The full retail price for the EV Solar Charger is anticipated to be around USD3000 (about RM13,165).

Currently, GoSun is offering an opportunity for interested buyers to secure ‘early bird’ pricing by placing a refundable USD100 (roughly RM448) deposit, although the final early bird price has not yet been disclosed. While the price might seem steep for a roof rack solar charger, it could be worthwhile for various reasons.

It offers the convenience of charging your EV during your workday without the need to plug in, provides solar power for off-grid camping, or serves as a backup power source during emergencies. So will this finally solve EV range issues?
