In recent years, Chery, a well-known automotive brand, has made a notable return to the ASEAN market, marking its reentry with the launch of the Chery Omoda 5 in Indonesia and Malaysia in 2023.
This debut model represents Chery’s first foray into the ASEAN NCAP (New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries) safety evaluation, setting a high bar for its future offerings in the region. The Chery Omoda 5 has achieved an impressive 5-Star rating from ASEAN NCAP, with a commendable total score of 88.64 points.
Moreover, this rating reflects the vehicle’s strong performance across four key safety assessment categories defined under the ASEAN NCAP 2021–2025 protocol. The Omoda 5 earned 36.77 points in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), 17.36 points in Child Occupant Protection (COP), 19.51 points in Safety Assist (SA), and 15.00 points in Motorcyclist Safety (MS).
The petrol-powered SUV has made significant strides in vehicle safety, offering a comprehensive suite of standard features across all variants. These include six airbags, an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a Seat Belt Reminder System for both front and rear seat occupants and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) for both city and inter-urban environments.
On top of that, the Omoda 5 is equipped with Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Auto High Beam (AHB), and Pedestrian Protection (PP) technology. Beyond these standard features, the Omoda 5 also offers several advanced safety assist technologies, either as standard or optional.
These include Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), and Lane Keep Assist (LKA). The 5-Star rating not only underscores Chery’s dedication to providing top-notch safety features but also sets a benchmark for its other models in the region. ASEAN NCAP hopes that Chery will continue to uphold these high safety standards across its future models, contributing to reducing the high number of road fatalities in the ASEAN region.
The ASEAN NCAP 2021–2025 assessment protocol evaluates vehicles across four domains, with AOP accounting for 40 points, and COP, SA, and MS each contributing 20 points to the overall score.
