BMW has recalled these vehicles in the U.S over risk of water pump connector short circuit
German automaker BMW has recently had to recall about 720,000 vehicles in the U.S market over a risk of a water pump connector short circuit. So now, this begs the questions, do Malaysian models also run the same risk and if so, will BMW also conduct a mass recall here as well?
The recent recall report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has highlighted a critical safety concern affecting certain BMW vehicles. According to the report, these vehicles are at an elevated risk of experiencing a “thermal event” if liquid infiltrates the water pump’s electrical plug connector, potentially causing a short circuit.
Moreover, the root cause of the issue has been identified as “insufficient sealing of the water pump.” BMW submitted the recall documentation to the NHTSA just a week ago, and the administration has since alerted the public via a tweet. This recall affects a number of BMW vehicles, and owners can expect to receive formal notification in the mail by early October.
The correspondence will include instructions on how to address the problem and arrange for necessary repairs. As of August 2024, BMW has received approximately 18 complaints, concerns, or field reports in the U.S. market that are related to or may be related to the identified issue.
On top of that, the company has not been notified of any accidents or injuries stemming from this problem. This information was detailed in BMW’s chronology provided with the recall report. To rectify the issue, BMW vehicle owners will need to visit an authorised BMW centre. Technicians will then inspect the vehicle to determine if they require replacement.
Additionally, a protective shield will be installed to prevent any fluid from the positive crankcase ventilation system’s intake air house from contacting the water pump. Importantly, BMW has assured customers that this repair service will be provided at no cost to the vehicle owners.
BMW Group, which manufactures several million vehicles annually across its various brands, reported a production total of 2.34 million BMWs and approximately 321,400 vehicles under its other brands in 2023. This is not a small number and BMW is not a small or unpopular brand so the automaker really needs to step up and fix this issue as soon as possible.
